New 45-70 need load info
« on: March 08, 2007, 12:15:22 PM »
Hey everyone. Just bought Huntnut's 45-70 encore 15" w/brake. I'm looking for reload info, I plan on buying a Mountain mould in 300gr - 350gr weight, any thoughts, I don't shoot jackets just cast lead, and I'm not a beliver in max loads, always found that in the middle is usualy the most accurate. Any help you send me will be appreciated, oh BTW, I'm not recoil sensitive. Thanks. Peter           aka pistolfan

What do you want to do with it?  Kinda hard to make recommendations without that piece of info....   ;)

The most accurate cast load in several of my .45-70s is a 350-400 grain bullet and 25 grains of IMR4227.  Not H4227, that didn't shoot nearly as well in my guns.

All guns shoot differently, I say start in the low Marlin load data and find a load the gets you the best accuracy in your gun.

I shoot mostly targets, but I also use these for hunting deer. I want the most accurate load I can find, that way both interests are covered. I shoot the "Postal Matches" in the CBA and I might try this one in that. Peter

A decade ago I won a number of CBA postals with that load and a 405-grain RCBS bullet in my Navy Arms RB.

For your intentions, IMR Trailboss is great. I use it in my .444marlin, shoots 1inch all day long. 16 shots in a row and the barrel was almost imperceptively warm, quiet also.
