.22lr or .17hmr?
« on: March 06, 2007, 06:46:00 PM »
I just got to thinking that either way im getting another NEF. But.... Its a single shot. I wanted a .22 just to shoot pdogs with and figured it would be good that way i could buy ammo in bulk. If i got the .17HMR it would be better, for longer shots ect. shells arnt that expensive cause a single shot wont eat as much ammo. My real big question is.... Can i get a .17 with open sights? and if i did would i robbing it of its capabilitys without a scope? dont really want another scoped gun but i spose i would eventualy break down and get it if it didnt come with open sights. just speaking what was on my mind. thanks in advance.

You can order a 17hmr accessory barrel with sights for an extra $50, but you can't buy a complete new rifle that way. Iron sights on a 17hmr wouldn't be the best way to get the full potential accuracy out of the 17hmr, but different strokes. Ammo is well over $10 a box now, as high as $13. If you want iron sights, I'd just get a 22Lr sportster or even the 22mag.

Quick,he must be a young'un.Talking about PD's with iron sites.Heck I can't see them with out some glass at past 50 yds.The 17M2 would be a good choice also. You can smoke um out to about 150 yds. pretty easy.Ammo is easy to find too.Price runs from $4.00-7.00 a box.Slow

Ain't that the truth!! I didn't even vote on the 2 gun poll cuz iron sights were required!! :-\

LOL ya i guess 19 is still young. I do think that i will go to sportsmans down in denver and see if they have a .22 mag with open sights, that will be a good way to spend some time on break. thanks for the input fellas, its much appriciated.

yep definatly going to go with the .22 mag! :o ;D :D I think it would make a great truck gun and will still get the job done with open sights. and ammo is fairly cheap.

Get 'em both!  I did, 22 mag is heavy hitter, 17 is more accurate.  Only kidding at 19 $$$$$ can be a problem.

Just put a new scope (yep he is my youngest sons age as well!) on the 17 and sighted it in today at the range - it is a tack driver when punching paper.  I got a group today w/TNT 17 gr HP about 5/8"@ 50 yds with 20 mph gusts! (after a few tries)  I forgot how much fun it is to shoot - me and my boys like to shoot paintballs off golf tees at 100yds with it - try it, it's a blast.

22 Ultra mag is fun too just not as accurate (1"- 1-1/2" @ 100yd)- still good enough for PD's.  I'm in woodchuck country - no PD's in NY (wish there was..someday wanna go west at try it)

I agree with the guys - 22 mag is the gun for your application.  After that your gonna want a .223 or 204, then you can reach out an touch 'em - I like the 223 for cheap ammo...but my next one is a 204.

Welcome to the club - know whatever choice you make you can"t go wrong with a Handi -  still the best value for the money.
