Can a .243 be re-chambered to a .240 Weatherby Mag?

The barrel can certainly be reamed out to the much larger Weatherby case - and the extractor might have to be changed. Then it should work fine.

skamaniac,

You would be better off re-chambering to a 6mm-06.  Comparing the 6mm-06 to the 240 Weatherby and you will find there isn't much difference.  Defiantly not enough to worry about, plus you wont have to change the extractor or worry about a belted case problem or the price of Weatherby brass.  You can use any 25-06 brass and easily neck it down to 6mm-06 without having to wonder about neck thickness.

Thank you,

The .240 Weatherby is the 6mm/'06. Study the diagrams. The .240 does have a belt swaged onto the case, but they are so close you can shoot .25/'06 brass necked down no problem (if you understand headspace).

In theory the longer chamber should just lengthen what you have. Move the shoulder forward. Etc. At the same time, if you happen to have a sloppy .243 chamber... Then there are problems. In bolt guns, the barrel has to be set back and the threads cut forward and the chamber "cleaned up". In a single shot... big trouble... Probably not worth the money needed. luck.
