Ontario TAK-1 or RAT-5

Both seem to be the same knife as far as size and functionality. Might explain why the RAT-5 is hard to find now. I personally would like to have both in 1095 carbon steel but I'm leaning towards the TAK-1, simply because of aesthetics I think. They both have the same handle, the only difference being that the RAT has a triangular cut lanyard opening and thumb grooves on the top of the blade. The TAK has a smoother overall appearance. D-2 would be nice in both too but a little more than I want to spend at this time.

I had a RAT-5 and the blade wouldn't hold an edge worth a darn.  I sold it on ebay.  I have a D2 kabar and that only takes a good edge if you use the ceramic sharpeners.

I like the ontario D2 knives and I'm considering getting one in d2 with the nylon sheath.

So the one you sold wasn't one of the D2 steel bladed ones.
I'm now seriously considering one of the TAK-1 in the D2 steel and was wondering about it..

The one I had and sold was not D2 steel.  I have a Kabar in D2 and it's a pretty decent knife but even that was tough to get a really good edge on.  I've had the best luck with Case knives when it comes to keeping them sharp, and being able to get them razor sharp.  If I were to buy another ontario, it would be in D2 steel though.

Just ordered a D2 Tak-1 Plain edge. Will be eagerly awaiting it's arrival. Here's a really good write-up on it.

Good choice.I have a TAK-1 with D-2 and 1095.The D-2 is the way to go.The TAK -1 is the perfect sized knife.For your next knife,it's Bark River all the way.May I suggest the Bark River Fox River.

I really like the Fox River, but I like so many of the Bark River line it's hard to decide on just which one will be the best for me............or even the first  :D.
I am concerned about the convex ground edge, are they hard to resharpen? Also how do the different type steels that they're using in them hold up to use? A-2 or the 12c27 seems to be the most common in these. Hold an edge? Today I'm actually leaning toward one of the Clip Point Skinners as a first choice. Maybe with green micarta instead of the black.
Just a little side note, I am a user and not collector of the knives I buy so that is a major factor in my decision making. The Fox River being a drop point has "dropped" it down the list since the TAK-1 is a drop point also. Don't currently have a good clip point knife.

I also have a clip point skinner with green mircarta and it's a fine knife. If I can't decide I would buy both if you can afford that.(thats why I have about 60 fixed blade knives ;D)I like The Fox River because The A-2 is easier for me to sharpen (BRK come very sharp and stay sharp for along time)I also like the belly on the Fox River blade.The clip point is very sharp at the tip of the blade un-like the Fox River and is stainless steel.The Fox river will tarnish some,but A-2 steel is a great steel.

OH NO!  :o I think I see my future!  :D

I most definitely have an affinity toward the fixed blades myself. Been looking at so many that I can't seem to stop or make up my mind on just one or two....or three.....or four......or.........yep I've been bitten by the knife bug alright.  ::)

Don't get the bug! I owned only 3 fixed blade knives 'till about 2 years ago and then I sat next to a custom knife maker for a weekend at a gun and knife show. That's where I caught the disease. Then I started checking knives out on ebay, it's been very expensive since then. Seriously, it's a very rewarding and satisfying hobby that I enjoy since the kids moved out and I have a little extra money.  IMO Bark River Knives are one of the best values for the money. There is a lot of custom makers that make excellent knives. Ingram, May, Dozier, and P.J. Tomes to name a few.  Good Luck!
