leader question
« on: February 28, 2007, 02:40:32 PM »
Today I lost 2 nice fish due to a leader breaking.  What is a good leader for crappy and trout fishing that is still managable in the cold?

I usually dont use a leader when fishing for panfish.  I like using 4 lb tst and take your time.  Is your line old?  Are you using ice fishing line or summer line?  It does get roughed up on the ice.  If you want a leader try vanish.

It was new 6 pound test.  I have retied all my tipups with 12 pound, so lets see what happens.  I use a 3 foot leader, and they broke in the middle - not near a knot.

That was not a panfish that broke your leader.  Sounds like a cruising pike past your way.  I have never lost a crappie on 6 lb unless it got in weeds or other obstruction.
