Shikari in .44 Mag????
« on: February 12, 2007, 01:22:05 PM »
Can anyone tell me what these shoot like? I am guessing they are better shooters than the current Handis with the allegedly oversized bores.

I think the prefix of the serial no. is AR*******....

A .44 would fit nicely in the safe...and save the shoulder from the 45/70 option!  :o

You have nothing to fear from the 45-70. They can be loaded down a long way or up as your comfort demands. It is a very flexible round with relatively low recoil. If I had known before what I know now about the 45-70 I never would have bothered with a 30-30.  ;D ;D ;D

My .45-70 Shikari shoots very well with the open sights, ca. 2 moa with loads it likes.  Recoil?  Not a problem with 300-grain bullets and 21 grains of BlueDot.  That gives around 1400 fps and close to .44 Mag performance.  A 400-grain bullet and 17 grains of BlueDot has even less recoil and 1100 fps.  Even the factory 405s don't recol badly.  The same loads in my lighter weight .45-70 Contender are stiffer, but not terrible. You can't load the Shikari to Handi pressure levels (the receiver is cast iron, not steel), but you'll likely quit first due to recoil.

If you are just looking for a large bore to shoot the current Handi in 45/70 can be loaded where it is pleasant to shoot.  Most of the trapdoor loads don’t have much more recoil than a top load .44mag.  The brass and bullets are a bit pricier and unfortunately you don’t find many empties lying around at the range.  Filling the bolthole with lead shot will add weight to the gun and make even Marlin loads manageable and I am someone who doesn’t like recoil. :)

Sorry guys, maybe I should have been clearer in my first post, I am after info on what kind of shooters these are.

The Shikari in question is a second hand 80's model. New ones are a rare sight on the shelves over here, let alone a Shikari.

I'll probably pick up a Buff classic one day in 45-70, but a 44 mag appeals to me. With the bad feedback around on the current 44 mag Handis and their oversize bores this seemed like a good idea.

Well I guess I'm going to find out now as I have bought the rifle.  ;D

Hi my names bang_off and...oh you know the rest  :D :D :D
