25-20 Contender
« on: February 16, 2007, 04:00:13 PM »
I am thinking about buying a Contender barrel in 25-20. I have no good reason for doing this. Some not so good reasons:
I think it might be fun for plinking.
I have a holo sight that does not like my .45 WinMag and I need a place to put it.
    I don't have a quarter bore
It may have been one of the first varmit calibers, so it is "historical"
Talk me out of this insanity (or give me another reason to buy one).

No good reason not to own one. Everyone should own a quarter bore. I was looking for a 25-20 and a person on this site offered me a 25-35 and i bought it. Sure is alot of fun to shoot. I say buy it.

I have an old 10" octagon barrel in .25-35 which I used for IHMSA shooting for years - even shot my first 40x40 with it.  Don't shoot it much any more, but I'll never get rid of it.   I also have a BF handgun in .25-20, 15" barrel, 1:10" twist.  It shoots 87-grain Speer TNT bullets into .8 moa aggregates at 100 yards using a 2x7 Simmons and H110 powder - on a calm day.  It is a lot of fun!   ;D

Looks to me like you already have four GOOD reasons to get one.  My favorite and most used reason for same is and always was "cause they make'm and I don't have one". Go for it. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walr  ;D

Get it because you need it!  That is what I tell my wife when I come home with another contender barrel.  I have four frames, and 31 different barrels, most of them have a scope of some kind mounted.  The 25-20 doesn't see much use, but it is there if I "need" it.

I have owned and shot most everything in the .22 class over the years. That seems to bne my favorite, and they see most of the action.  I like them for head shots on turkey, and for shooting varmite.

Thank you all. I guess I will be buying. This is a bad place to be talked out of buying barrels. Thank goodness.

Coming to us with that question has to be similiar to walking into a AA meeting carrying a jug of good bourbon.  Let us know how it shoots.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

Thinking of a quarterbore?  Think 256 win mag.  A 25-20 on steroids.  Yes, you have to make brass, it's fun and easy.  Much more power or not if you wish.  A great little cartridge!

The .256 was my first choice, but the dies were costly ($133 for the RCBS). I can get a set of 25-20 for about $22.

I don't really care about the power. The 25-20 is, to me, just an oversized centerfire version of a .22 rimfire. It is a plinker. I have other barrels for power.

thanks,

mike

I bought .256 winmag RCBS group D dies for $28 or so from one of the discount catalogs.  Cant remember which one.  Really $133
