BC range report
« on: February 21, 2007, 11:01:34 AM »
I just came in from shooting the new BC 45-70 I shot groups today insted of just shooting out at 200yrds while brakeing in the barrel. I could only shoot at 50yrds today because all the mud from the snow melt. Anyways my load is 29grs H-4198, 405gr cast meister bullet, br-2 primers after I got it zeroed in my next 5 shots were all touching I cant beleave how accurate this thing is. The only problem is my rear peep sight is just about out of adjustment and I'm hitting dead on at 50yrds. I might try a differnt incert on the front and see if that helps. Max hunting yardage with this load and open sights would only be 150yrds ,but for long range shooting or the occasional coyote hunt I would like to shoot out to 300-500 yrds just for fun. Might have to step the load up some to get the range I want but I like this load allready. I'm going to play with it some more out at 100yrds if it drys up.

I used to have a BC and I'm not sure if they make lower front globe sights or not, but don't think so.  I know they do sell a side mount Williams peep sight that does go much higher

http://hr1871.com/Store/default.aspx  scroll about halfway down the page.  It sells for $59.95 from the web site.

The other option is to place anout a 1/8" or 3/16" shim under the existing sight, with longer screws of course, and try that.  It's cheaper than $60.

There were post inserts for the front globe but I don't think they went any lower than a crosshair or circle insert.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

All of the Williams sights are listed in the FAQs and Help sticky in the Peep and Firesights link, direct link below, the Williams FP-Target is the $60 one, but ya still need a screwdriver to make adjustments unless you replace the set screw with a knob which Bernie did to make adjustments tooless. All the sights are top mount in the same 2 rear holes the WGRS factory sight mounts in.

You'll also need to replace the too high .584" tall 17A front sight with a .404" tall sight if you want to have the best long range capability. For some unknown reason, they put the tallest of the three Lyman 17A sights on a bunch of the BCs, some also come with the .494" mid height sight. The .404" tall sight will put a 405gr bullet 1½" high at 100yrd at about 1600fps in my .45-120 BC, with the FP sight all the way at the bottom of the travel, 8 or 10 clicks up, don't remember which ::), puts a 555gr cast bullet dead on at 200yds at 1700fps.

There's also a link in the FAQs on long range sights for the BC/Target. ;)
