H&R 22 Hornet
« on: February 12, 2007, 12:56:04 AM »
Years ago like maybe 20 I bought a H&R Topper. It had a 22 Hornet Barrel, a 30-30 Barrel, and a 12 Gauge Barrel. I was wondering if this is different then the Handi Rifles you guys speak of? I have never even shot the 30-30 or Hornet, but was always told they were poor at best. Any comments? I was digging in the vault yesterday and when I saw it in the back it sparked my curiosity.

            Thanks

Who ever told the 22 Hornett and 30-30 were poor at best did
not know what they talking about! They are worth more now than
when you bought them. I am sure some of the old timers will tell you
the same thing. Welcome to the forums. Marv.

Marv is 100% correct Whopper Stopper, he has the knowledge and expierence to back up his words also. Those are 2 (3 counting the 12 gauge) of the all time best barrels and calibers for a Handi. The traditional rimmed cartridges just seem to go with this traditional gun. If you ever decide to sell that "safe queen" please give me or Marv first crack at it. You have a beauty there in 2 great classic calibers which can really do it all in a single where you can load the 30-30 with spitzer style bullets. With the new ammo and the strides in reloading componenets since you bought it the capabilities of those 3 barrels has risen tremendously, with the fairly new Dixie slugs you could take down a rhino with the 12 gauge!!! If you decide you don't want it please let me know, at least offer it here to some "handiholic" that can appreciate that old classic for what it is and just not look at it as some "cheap old single shot". Your can can not be fitted with additiional barrels at the factory because of it's age but I don't feel it should be broken up and sold as parts buy anyone just to possibly make a couple of bucks more, it should be kept together as a unit by someone who appreciates it for what it is. And as Marv says, welcome aboard the forum....<><.... :)

Whopper, The above two posters know there stuff. I would take these barrels out with the receiver and shoot them. They are the most fun you can have without laughing. I have the 30-30 barrel that you speak of and have mated it to a newer receiver. My barrel is fairly accurate with handloads and is my only deer rifle at this time. I like it simply because of the slimmer profile and less weight compared to the factory offering of today. With the scope, it weighs just a smidge over 6lbs., has very little recoil and is a pleasure to take afield or sit in a stand or blind.

I just saw an auction where the seller was offering an older Topper 22 Hornet for bid. The high bid for that was $295 at that time. This will give you an idea of what you have there. Sounds like you a good "savings" account if you decide to tap it.

I own an H&R  258 (not Nef)  30-30 & 20 ga, SN said made in 1982.
I had barely used the 20 caliber but shot a lot of home cast 30-30. Accuracy is quite good at least.
My 30-30 casting story:
