357 throat

Mornin all ,todays question  is about the 357 max. I was looking at load data for the max, and the oal listed for most jacketed bullets is 1.910". Out of curiousityI made a dummy 357 round from a 357 mag shell to 2.10"with a 35 cal rifle bullet 250 gr round nose. I put it in my handi closed it ,then after removal measured it again 2.10",do you think i could use the 357 max in my gun without reaming the throat?     Thanks     Mike ???

Chances are you can use 360 DW without changes and I have had two 357 barrels and neither would chamber a Max but came very close.

I agree with eskimo 36, I have had a couple of .357 barrels and all have been exactly that way. Yours could concievably fire a .357 Max without reaming, stranger things have happened. H&R/NEF made .357 Max's right from the factory for a while so yours could be bored long enough for it to work....<><.... :)

The rifle bullets are shaped diffrent, You may just be putting the nose of the bullet into the rifleing, Do you have any 180 grain XTPs? If you do try loading one of those into the back cannalur and see if it will chamber and check that OAL.

I have mag bullets loaded @1.595 and with the same bullet in max brass its @1.910 8)

The 250gr round nose is a similar profile to the xtp,and ive had this in my chamber at 2.10".The barrel was fully locked up, and when opened the round came out as easily as a 38 spl,and still measured 2.10".I dont have to push the dummy bullet in at all ,it slides in to the rim like butta.Does anyone have a spare max brass i could mock up to test?     Thanks       Mike
