.300 wby for moose ?

I am going to Canada for a moose hunt.  I plan on using my .300 weatherby mag. and 180 gr. barnes triple shock bullets. They blew a big hole in a whitetail so I figure they will work on moose. Any knowledgable opinions will be appreciated. thanks

The .300 Wby should be plenty of gun considering this is Alaska's recommendation for moose medicine....

Rifle – Any rifle capable of shooting a bullet of 150 grains or more at 2500 fps or more will work on moose. The .308, .30-06, .300 magnum, .338 magnum, and .375 magnum calibers are all good choices. I personally use a .300 magnum topped with a 2X7 power variable scope and fitted with a synthetic stock. Make sure that your rifle is properly sighted in before going afield. I sight in to hit 3½ inches high at 100 yards, which means I can hold dead center on a moose's chest from the muzzle out to over 300 yards without thinking about where my bullet will hit.

Both of moose hunting partners carry 300 Win Mag shooting federal premium 180gr Partitions.  This combination has worked for a lot of moose, at least one or two a year.

If you mean the NWT/Yukon area of Canada, then the moose are huge; as big as they get, but no matter where you go, any .30 cal is plenty for moose.  


If you do use a .30 cal then absolutely use a 180-200gr bullet. In a .300 mag like the Weatherby I'd handload a 200gr bullet like the Barnes X.


Moose usually die astonishingly quickly for such large animals; unless they are in the rut and you get a big bull riled up. Sometimes they can take a few shots to bring down.


A couple of years ago my buddy called out a 49" bull and that guy was fired up! I put 4 225gr .338WM right through him at 40 yards and then my buddy finally finished him off with a 5th shot. At each shot I fired the bull only moved a few steps and you really couldn't tell I was hitting him until about the 3rd shot. He started to wobble a bit after that...
All of those shots I fired were broadside, double lung shots and they were all inside about a 6" circle.


But that was an unusual situation with a rutting moose. Most bull moose if they are not alarmed will drop with 1 well placed shot. They seldom go more then 20 yards...

A 308 or 270 will work fine on a moose. Hit them wrong with a 460 whtby and your screwed. There's no magic.

 In the accessible parts of BC the logging cutblocks can be huge. That combined with shorter seasons may mean one may have to take a long shot at the only opportunity you get. (Bulls often appear at the timber edge just before dusk.) If your a capable shot, this is where the mags. shine.
