Strange looking H&R rifle
« on: February 03, 2007, 03:23:36 PM »
I just picked up this funny looking H&R rifle.  The fella I got it from told me that it's a 30-06, but I can't figure out how to break it open and drop a round into the chamber.  The little lever on the side moves back and forth, but it won't break open like my other NEF and H&R shotguns and rifles ???

I'll bet that you'll find that your rifle's goofed up and shoots more than one round. I've got your single shot Handi I'll trade you for your defective gun... ;D

Actually it could be more Harrington & Richardson than most think, H&R built over 428,000 of em during the course of their production life. ;)

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I've wanted a garand for a long time.  The CMP has been out of service grade garands for a while though.  At present,  they only have field and rack grade left.  I picked this one up from a guy who bought it a couple of years ago and now his collection has taken a new direction.  It's a service grade CMP rifle, and it was made by Harrington & Richardson...well I just couldn't resist that.  It should feel right at home in my safe next to it's much younger H&R, and NEF relatives.

An excellent rifle to be sure and looks to be in great condition. Congrats and enjoy. They are getting harder to find and more expensive.

Yes, the M1 garand uses an en-bloc clip that holds 8 rounds.  The clip is ejected, and the bolt locks open upon firing the last round.  Most of the garands that I see at gun shows are somewhat overpriced, and there are some junky ones that have been slapped together in somebody's basement.  Be careful...the ability to assemble a rifle from a bunch of parts does not a gunsmith make!

The best place to get an M1 garand is the CMP.  They are also going to have a bunch of Carbines available in March.

H&R didn't make any carbines, but I think I still may have to get one!

H&R was "the" largest supplier of military weapons from WWII thru early Vietnam era. Here's another configuration for whalers in the venerable 45-70 caliber.

...there are many kinds of wounded, and only one kind of dead. Do it the Handi way, one shot, one kill.
