It's getting to be a long winter.
« on: February 01, 2007, 04:25:42 AM »
It is getting to be a long off-season here in the Missouri Ozarks.  The weather has been to bad that I have been able to make only one trip to the range in the last month or so.  I have a new 1894 in .44 mag that needs to digest the ten different loads that I have loaded for it and my 45/70 has a new scope that needs fine tuned.  The one day that I did get to go, there was about a 20mph gusting cross wind and I gave up after I couldn’t get either rifle to shoot close to the same spot at fifty yards.  I have read and re-read ever outdoors magazine I have and have cleaned and oiled my guns so often that they probably won’t shoot but just squirt.  I find myself reading and even participating in forums such as What is your favorite chipmunk gun? That I normally wouldn’t get anywhere close to.  I’ve sold my .44 and .308 Handi barrels and will probably also sell the .223 bull barrel.  I am looking forward to the time when someone gets hold of a .45LC to see if they are shooters.  After all I have a whole bag of 45 empties that I have picked up over the years and it would be  a shame to let them continue to just lie there.  Don't bother to offer to take them off my hands! :D  It snowed here again last night and the only good thing is I will be able to do some advanced scouting in my favorite deer woods if I can just get my porcine rear out of the chair and out in the white stuff.  I looked at the long-range forecast and don’t see much of a break in the cold weather for the next ten days.  Gloom, despair, and agony. :D :D :D

Too bad you aren't here, you could go out scouting with me.  Weather is beautiful, temp is in the single digets at night, and getting up to the high 20s during the day.  Actually yesterday it got up to +34 degrees for a while.  Sun is shinning, and we have a total of 6 hours and 53 minutes of it today.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Yup...winter can be a drag...but...Get bundled up...and head on out...a little snow shouldn't stop ya from being out side...Granted it isn't as pleasant as our springs here in Mo. but it isn't as bad as what other people have to deal with....There's always jobs and things that can be done around here..and the weather unless below zero..doesn't usually keep  me in...

What’s a rabbit?  It’s been so long since I saw one.  Years back (Warning Geezer attack, Geezer attack) After a snow I could take my .22 and start walking down the fence rows (some of you older guys do remember what those were don’t you?) and within a quarter mile I would have a limit.  The last time I tried that in about three miles all I saw were canine tracks.  Around here because of land use changes and the coyote population explosion rabbits are few and far between.  If they are going to survive as a species they are going to have to learn to dig deep holes or learn to climb trees. ;)
