Blown out plugged barrel!

 >:(  As I was Putting my ultra varmint .243 back in the truck. I noticed that I must have fired it with a plugged barrel.  :'( It apears the tip was just plugged and blew out the last 3/8" of rifling and the bore is about 3/8" diameter at the end of the barrel. I Dropped  .243 bullet and it appears to stop against the rifling about .80 down from the end of the barrel. I am planning on taking the barrel to a machinest friend of mine. Taking off 1.5 " of barrel an recrowning it. Any one experianced with shortening a barrel? Any advice will be appreciated.

I shot "at" an elk with an apparently snow plugged barrel of a Rem M760 30-06 a long time ago, evidently I had walked under a snow covered limb and got some snow in the muzzle which probably melted some, then froze. ::) It blew the front sight off and bulged the barrel and put a split tween the two sight mount holes, drew no blood or hair, tracked the elk for a mile with no sign of a hit. :-\ Had 2" cut off the barrel and recrowned, hunted with it for several more years as a carbine!!  Needless to say, I started taping the muzzle when hunting in any kind of inclement weather. ;)

I never have, when I was younger my grandfather did with a rifle and had it re crowned. He had a gun shop do it and it went ok.

my cousin was cleaning a 22 rifle when we were young and got the home made patch ( a t shirt ripped strip of cloth with a knot in it ) stuck in the barrel abt half way down
he loaded it and braced it in some firewood at the wood pile and tied a string to it and from around the corner pulled the trigger
it fired and after a good cleaning and thorough inspection showed no signs of any problems
i guess large centerfire calibers with all the extra pressure is a different story
just glad no one got hurt

Saw a movie once, where they used condoms and rubber bands over the barrel to keep out the foriegn objects.  Don't remember the movie, but I remembered that trick.  Strange how an "old guy's" mind works. :D

I just use duct tape or cloth tape, but have also used finger cots and balloons, prefer the tape.

They make a tiny condom just to put over the end of a gun barrell.  I use them all the time here in snow ciuntry.  Freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw, and tape comes off.

Rog, those are the finger cots, they sell em as "muzzle mitts" too, but the don't stay on very good and I ended up taping them on, might just as well use tape to begin with! I've used duct tape for too many years, it flat works here, but most of the country doesn't have the extreme weather you do up there......thank goodness!! :D

Here's a silly question. Do you just tape over the end and leave it and just pull up and shoot? The bullet just goes right through the tape? Charlie

Actually Charlie, the pressure produced in the barrel by firing is supposed to blow the tape out before the bullet arrives. My friend from "the bottom" uses this trick on his kids' guns to keep them from plugging the barrel when they drop them or use them for digging holes and such.  ::)

Tim,

 a latex glove will work well ,one finger cut off for your barrel ,four more left in your bag for later, also you can shoot right thru with no problem

Roy, same problem with those, they don't stay on in the brush, specially once the barrel gets wet, if they need to be taped on, why bother! Like I said, I've been at this for too many years, duct tape works best.  ;)

Charlie, if you read the link I posted at Handloads, you'll see that it doesn't hurt anything and doesn't affect accuracy. I press it on the end of the muzzle, then press it on around the end of the barrel, a 2" square of duct tape will do ya. I've used electrical tape too, but it's harder to get off and gets  brittle when it's cold. The duct tape works best when warmed a bit before applying. A little WD40 will remove any adhesive residue left on the barrel after removing the tape.

A buddy of mine uses garage sale price stickers.
They are already cut round and about the right size.
Basicly masking tape.
Just be carful of the ones that have prices on them.
Don't want to sell your deer rifle for $.25.
