Bullet Application and 'CXP' Rating
« on: January 30, 2007, 01:46:35 PM »
hello,

i'd like to know what kind of successes or failures you've had/seen with the Winchester 130 gr' Power Point bullet in the .270 caliber.    i'm interested in its use on deer, black bear, hogs, or elk.   (larger bear, maybe?).    i'm also wondering what is its 'CXP' rating, since my own older references are no longer to be found.

thank you,

A good friend of mine uses the 130's for deer.  They seem to perform very well.  If I was going to use it for something larger, like elk, I think I would use a premium bullet in the 150 grain range.

i personally don't believe in premium bullets, unless you consider a Nosler Partition to be a premium bullet.   i think the standard bullets are generally under-rated.   that being said, the years-ago Power Points that Jack O'Connor used may not be fit for some of the same uses they were then.   i think that the 'CXP'-2 rating is probably fit for what i've seen about their results.   i was told on the 'NEF' site that's the rating.   some people are impressed with them; some are disappointed.

the Core-Lokt's seem to have a better reputation for getting the 'heavy-lifting' done with elk and other tougher critters.   i'll stick to them if i go bear hunting with my son-in-law.

take care,

The 130 PPs (even the 150 PPs) are fine for whitetails, but forget it for hogs. I have seen many failures on hogs with PP bullets.  From .270 Winchester, to 7mm Rem mag.

If you want to just shoot whitetails, then the PPs are fine.  If you want to shoot hogs, then use 150 Nosler partitions, or 150 Barnes X (now called TSX) or 150 Trophy Bonded Bear Claw.

Zach'

thanks for your post, and its observations up-close on those bullet failures.   that's what i was worried about.   the Core-Lokt or a Hornady Spire Point will solve the problem for me.    i can get Core-Lokt's very reasonably........most of the time........at the gunshows here in n.e. Ohio.    the Hornady's are worth it, too, for what they provide in BC' and terminal performance.

thanks, again,
