Time delay quills?
« on: January 29, 2007, 02:17:24 PM »
Was out over the weekend with my half scale Napoleon.... some of the local Civil War Re-enactor folk were also at the range.  First time that I've ever had an actual proper crew for my gun.  One of them mentioned something really neat... neat enough to pass along.

Firing options are basically either by fuse or quickmatch.... both have their share of advantages and disadvantages, especially when it comes to just when the gun will go off.  A fuse can take 3 to 10 seconds depending on the length of fuse.  Once it is lit there is pretty much no turning back if something unexpected should show up down range.... like some idiot on a dirt bike.  A quickmatch fires in the blink of an eye but often pretty well frays the end of the rope in the linstock.  One of the Civil War folk mentioned they usually insert a 1/2" to 3/4" long piece of fuse in the end of the quickmatch.  Worked real well with my home made Post-It Note quills.

When fired with a linstock it will give a 1 to 1.5 second delay.... enough time to get the linstock away from the vent plume and maybe take 1 to 2 steps away.  Of course there is still the possibility of the idiot on the dirt bike.

Lately I've been experimenting with Vis-Quick, a very fast burning fuse. Gives me about the same effect you described. A 2½" length burns in about one second.

Interesting looking fuse.... however, I have probably 300' of American made Visco.... wonder how long it will take to use that up a half inch at a time?

Better git shootin'...  ;D

That's why I say I'm "experimenting" with the Vis-Quick, I like the way it shoots but I've got several rolls of the standard Am. visco that needs to be used up before I start stocking up on a different fuse.

On the downside, lighting fuse with slowmatch is not as easy as a quill. At least to me, maybe I just need more practice.

On the plus side, precutting pieces of VQ is a lot less work than rolling quills. I may try a drop of glue and some 4F to form a combustible 'head' on one end.

Terry.... cut the fuse on an angle, that will expose more of the center area of the fuse and make it easier to light.  Or, nip the end lengthwise with a pair of diagonal cutting pliers and spread it open a bit... that will also expose more the the center.

How are standard quill igniters made and lit? I'm guessing it's just FFFF inside a quill section lit by slowmatch? If the touch hole is about 3.5" deep are these still a viable option?

Hi Don.... You've pretty much got the idea.  Here is a thread on how to roll your own using common Post-It Notes.

If any one has any more links to quill making posts, put them up.  Both of theses links were in the  FAQ's post.  I have added them to Safe shooting and cannon plans post.
