Sigh....Caliber ideas....
« on: January 17, 2007, 12:47:08 PM »
Well, it's looking like I might be out of luck on getting a 460 barrel on the Encore I'm ordering.  The gun shop said today that they can't find anything for it...so I'm kinda upset : /  So now I'm down to getting another caliber...I was looking forward to the 460 because I'd have a trio of calibers in one gun, and I could shoot 45LC all day pretty cheap.

My other two barrels I was planning on getting anyway were 45/70 and .308.  So I'm thinking about going with one of those..thinking the .308 as you can buy cheap ammo for that pretty easily.  What about the 500-he thought they could get that.

Any other calibers you'd think about getting that are fun for paper punching but could be used for hunting?

I don't know how badly you wanted the 460 but if you were willing to shell out some $$ you could get one stubbed by Precision Rifleworks. It'd set you back but it'd shoot.

You might also look at getting on in a close caliber and getting it rechambered. I'm not an expert by any means, just something I've read around...

I think Redhawk, moderator of this forum, had a 454 Casull rechambered to a 460.  I'm just starting out with my 308; so far I like it very much, but not as much as my 7-30 Waters - yet.  If you want to do a lot of shooting relatively cheap you can try the 223, but you don't have multiple calibers in one.  You could also try a 445 Supermag.  You can shoot the 445, 44 mag., and 44 Special.

I have a Contender in 223 already, and I'm not at all familiar with the 445..but I do have a Super Redhawk in 44 : /

What kind of accuracy are you seeing with your .308 with factory ammo?

My dad thinks I should go with a slightly smaller caliber..as in .243 or 22-250..but I dunno..he's been a big caliber guy up until he hurt his back :P  Now he does this whole shot placement speech just because he can't handle the bigger ,and in my opinion, more fun calibers :)

The 445 is like a magnum version of the 44 mag.  So far the accuracy has been okay with the 308.  I got 2" groups my first time out with cheap Winchester ammo.  The scope I have on there is temporary - a fixed power Simmons.  I have a variable power Bushnell on the way from Midway.  I'll probably try some Federal Power Shocks next in 150 grains.  I think a 243 would also make a great caliber.  I have a 6mm Rem (244) in a carbine barrel and it's a tack driver.  In a 15" barrel I'm sure it would more than hold it's own.

You can get a 454 Casull barrel and have it re-chambered like I did, if your heart is set on the 460 Mag. If not the 45-70 would be another great start. The 500 Mag is a handful in an Encore.

45-70 seems like a great round to me.  I have one in a NEF and really had a lot of fun with it.  I think I'd leave it open sites though, it'd be my "brush gun."  Although then I'd feel like I'm not doing it justice...

Well, I got my stuff in for my 308.  If the weather cooperates I'll head out to the range to try and improve on that 2" group.

We can love those .45-70's all we want to, but when you put one in an iron-sighted Contender or Encore, you'd better love recoil, too.

I have to download my .45-70 Contender to 1635fps with 300 grain hollow points to bring it into the realm of enjoyable!  That's still well into crittur-killin velocity without the hand-killin recoil.

I owned an SSK 12" Contender in .45-70, and I didn't think the recoil was all that bad.  It was super accurate.  The Encore is just too heavy for me.

Right now I have an Encore with
12" 454, 12" 45/410, 15" 45-70, 14 3/4" 308 and a 15" 209x50 barrels and none of the barrels have breaks or ports.

the 454 is a handful will 300 gr cast bullet load, the 45-70 I am using 1895 loads for a 405 gr cast bullet it is not as bad as the 454 and quite fun to shoot.
the 308, 45-410 and 209x50 all feel about the same.

You can't go wrong with the 454 (or 45-70). With the 454 you can always shoot the 45 colt out of it for target shooting and lhunting. After you shoot the 454 a while and if you still feel you need more power you can always  have it re chambered to the 460. The 460 may shoot a little further and flatter then the 454, but it will not kill any deader then the 454.

Ramos 1212 where did you get that encore grip? Looks like it will take the bite away from that action tang.

These grips are very comfortable.  The gentleman that makes them is Denzel Roberts out of Houston, TX.  He made one for my G2.  I liked it so much I had to get one for my Encore.  He'll do laminates, maple, and walnut  By the way, he only does email or faxes.  Every once in a while you'll see his stuff on Ebay.  Here's hist website:

Does that thumb rest get in the way when gripped with two hands.

It does a little with this pistol.  I bought this grip off of Ebay so it wasn't customized to me.  It doesn't at all on my G2.

Oddball idea....45 Win Mag. I love unloved calibers. This one will do a 230 gr at over 1600 fps. It is at the limit of what I care to shoot and is quite accurate. I use it for drives (when I am the driver). There supposedly is factory ammo for it, but I reload.

I admit, there is not much difference with the .44 mag, but I love unloved calibers.
