hern iron works??

  i am interested in a cannon from hern iron works, has anyone had experence with them?? how is there quality?? good barrels??  i am going to ask them to not put the steel liner in because i will be piting a rifled liner in the gun a 3 in rifle.   i love the price it is so cheap   that is why i am a little worried about quality.

The only thing I have heard of about Hern is that their liners are not true caliber.  Since you are going to instal you own liner that shouldn't be a problem.

Do you have access to a lathe to bore the barrel out and fit the new liner?

Have you inquired of Hern to use your liner when they make the gun?

I have Hern Mortar and am quite happy with it.

When I ordered it, there was a couple week delay in shipping because they were not happy with the batch they just ran. I took that as a positive sign that they were not willing to ship crap.

The liners are seemeless tubing with a welded plug in the breech. Mine measures just about dead nuts on a 2.250", and is as straight as I have the ability to measure it.

If you could get them to put your rifled liner in their mold it sure would save you some work. The one thing I can see that would concern them is if something goes wrong, and the barrel is not up to snuff after casting it would be your liner, not theirs. that they would be scrapping. For that reason they may not be willing to do that. Give Joel at Hern a call and ask him !

I've the Hern half scale Napoleon.  My only concern is that it seemed a bit thin, but looking at the original Napoleons it is pretty much the same.  I haven't been over 500gr GOEX Cannon and feel pretty safe at that level.  Don't know if the barrel is made by casting first and then adding the liner or if the barrel is cast around the liner.  I really have no problem with either their quality or customer service.

I live about 50 miles from Hern Iron works .They make there cannon with iron between case40 to case60.I'm working with Joel right now on a new line with 3/4" liners so that they could be worked latter. One of my first questions was can a rifled tube poured in place,I would supply the tube and was told ,  yes, but no gaurantees, there is some meltdowns and the tube might deforms or collapses. If I was you ask abot the new liners and breech plug.

Gary,

If you are talking to Joel, ask him about the thickness of the breechplug and if they could be made thicker, with a cupped, rounded face ( as in... n-ssa  rules thickness/shape )

I wanna buy a couple of caronnade barrels in the next month or so and thicker breech plug and liner wall would be a nice plus.

Will the carronnade barrel be one of the ones that will have the new, thicker liner?

Also, a sub-chamber in their mortar would be a nice feature as well. Without it, reasonable (like 100 yard) shooting gets a bit tricky due to the small charges and large shamber size.

I am thinking about buying a 5/8 scale carronade, I also would like to know alittle bit about this cannon, size of vent hole, how far back you put it or drill it , how many grains of powder to feel safe to shoot blanks in a 5/8 and a 3/4 scale if I decide to go larger scale I am not real familar with a larger cast barrel or any cast barrel as far as that goes.  Thanks MAX

Use the Charts in  Switliks The More Complete Cannoneer and in N-SSA  and AAA rules to determine the max charge which is the blank charge. You will find all of those referenced in the Safe Cannon loads post at the top of this board.

The Hern barrel will require that you drill and tap the barrel for a vent liner. The bore of the vent liner will be determined by your ignition type.  Again the rule of thumb that Have use is  1 1/2 calibers.  A caliber is the diameter of your fuse.  1 1/2 caliber vent for a 1/8 inch fuse would be  1/8  plus  1/16 equals 3/16 inch.  Switliks The More Complete Cannoneer also has information on the vent liner  and where to put it.
