hackle
« on: May 01, 2003, 08:07:32 AM »
Does anyone know of a book/website/how to article, etc. about preparation of hackles from birds you killed yourself?

I am trying to figure out how to prepare the hackles for long term use.

Thanks,

Brent

Jeans,    I keep my hackles in plastic boxes with a few moth balls.   I have had some necks for over ten years.   As far as preparation goes,  you only have to prepare a hackle for the fly you are tying at the time.  No other preparation is needed.   Some times when I keep fresh gamebird hackle or quills I will let them dry for a few days with a bit of salt on them to ensure that any flesh which may be on them dries up.  Then just box em' up and use them when needed.

Regards,  Bill

you can rub the skins down with borax to preserve it...leave the feathers in the skin and pull off as necessary.  Talk to your local taxidermist for the particulars, but i think the borax is all you need.  i did this for my pheasant and grouse and had no issues.  as was already posted, store your feathers with a mothball or few to discourage critters from eating them.

hope this helps
Thanks!
