22-250 or 25-06?
« on: January 16, 2007, 06:23:32 AM »
OK Guys, I know nothing about either of these cartridges.  Which one will give me the best accuracy at longer ranges, 300 to 600 yards.  With less pelt damage.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Tough question to answer.

First off, I guess that you are talking about varmint hunting, and perhaps coyotes?

As for accuracy, it depends on the actual gun, load, etc.  I have seen 25-06s shoot better than .22-250s, and vica versa.

600 yard shots?  That's pretty darn far.  I don't recommend such shots for anyone to take (at any animal that is).  But if you are inclined to still shoot at that distance, the .25-06 will have more power at that distance than the .22-250.

Pelt damage?  It depends more on the design of the bullet than anything else.  A full metal jacket will generally pass right through, where as a soft point, or hollow-point, will create much more pelt damage.

25-06 will do better at bucking the wind at 600yd for sure,
but 22-250 will cause less damage.

i'd call the Sierra tech line for that one and ask them what their bullet design parameters are for those calibers at those distances.    i'd make my decision after talking to them.

BUT:  the .22-250 in its very common 1 in 14" rate of twist is not really a varmint cartridge at 600 yds' in my opinion.    the .25-06 MIGHT be, but i think the .22 caliber is good for approx' 400 to 450 yds' unless its rate of twist, bullet weight, and barrel length are increased beyond that of a standard-issue .22-250 Handi.

these is better bullets for long range in 257 then 224 so i woulf say the25-06 but at that range i would go with your 30-06.

Either one will do it if you can hit it at that range. ;D

it wasn't shown as an option; but if you want to do it at those distances with a Handi', the best way is with the 26" barrel and those wonderful match-grade / competition-grade projectiles they have in .280 caliber.    they are well-engineered and they will reach out and touch something with that long barrel...........unless you run into a 'slow' barrel which you can admittedly work on.

i'd consider it as the best option in a Handi'

A 168 grain match bullet out of a .308 will do almost no damage, and is probably the most accurate Handi offering.
