22-250 better??
« on: January 14, 2007, 02:05:34 PM »
i currently have a 223 heavy barrel handi
it shoots around 1inch at 200 yards
i saw an ultra varmint in 22-250 at the local toy store
would i benefit from switching from my .223 to the 22-250
shooting out to say 300/400 yards??
i know the 22-250 has a bigger case for more powder capacity
but out of the box with factory ammo is the 22-250 any more accurate than what im shooting now?
thanks

Sureshot,

I think accuracy is an individual thing with each rifle.  1 inch at 200 yards is nothing to sneeze at.  As far as the 22-250 goes the only real benifit that you get from it is reach with a flatter trajectory.  I doubt if it will shoot any better than your .223 but shooting flatter as a result of the greater speed will make it easier to hit with at longer ranges as you don't have to contend with as much hold over.

Sureshot....If I had a .223 that would shoot 1 inch groups at 200 yards I certainly wouldn't get rid of it regardless of whether or not you get the 22-250.

Just my opinion,

The 22 250  is about 600 fps.faster with any bullet, and that means more energy for the target.I've shot coyotes at 387 yds with my 223,but it was barely enough to do the job.My 220 Swift has killed them at 665 yds.with a little better kill. The chance's of getting a Handi 22 250 to shoot as good as your 223 are very slim. Mine was shooting about that good with handloads, but shot factory ammo all over the place.      Digger

The 22-250 does outclass the 223 in power, flatter trajectory, and velocity.
But I have yet to see as many reports on 22-250 Handi users to warrent me trading in my 223's.
If your wanting more velocity and a flatter trajectory then I suggest the 204. I haven't heard many that weren't happy with them.

It is my humble opinion that if I were you, I would give that .223 an extra hug tonight. I know several fellow shooters locally that are "not" doing that well @ 200yds with their famously branded bolt guns. Oh ... they tell everyone how great a "shooter" they have but there are no 200 yd targets with 1" groups to support their claims. I am only saying you might certainly regret it later  if you let that .223 go for another rifle (in any caliber) you have yet to shoot. I have a .223 Handi bb and it isn't going anywhere. Can you guess why?

22-250 is a great round,as is the 223 thats why I have both.I agree with Rowdy and bigjeepman, don;t let that 223 go,you will regret it later. To good of a shooter. Now if you want a 22-250 for longer shots, get another handi or even a barrel, then you are good to go!
Can't help you as to factory ammo as I handload only. With good loads I can't tell any difference between the two as they both are under half inch groups at 100 yards. But don't get rid of that 223.unless you sell it to me!

You really should have both. The 22-250 is a great round --out to 450 yards.

22-250 is kind of a hot rod of cartriges.
It dosn't offre anything you will ever "need" over the 223.
But If you want it bad enuff theres no stoping you.
