I want to start by saying I found this sight a few days ago and am so happy that I stumbled across it in my wandering, tons of useful info here.  My Christmas present to my self this year was a new stainless handi, synthetic stock with the normal 22" barrel in .223.  The purchase was inspired by my brother who this fall bought a handi in the .17hmr.  I liked that little gun so much I had to have one but wanted a little more smoke for a varmint gun, the primary use, I like the .223 round and have a lot of experience with it in my AR.  So in preperation for woodchucks this spring I have been making friends with all my amish neighbors here in  Lancaster County PA, who all seem to dislike their field horses stepping in the chuck holes, I have put on a Burris Fulfield II 4.5 - 14 x 42  and am searching for the best ammo.  The gun seems to be really accurate with any decent fmj rounds, rem, win, even ultramax and blackhills have shot pretty tight groups here in the yard at 100yds. I am going to have to step into a varmint round of some sort since I doubt the farmers want fmj rounds flying down past the house after ripping through a chuck at the top of a hill.  I know every gun is going to have one ammo that is the best so my main question is, what is the best varmint round?  Not just manufacturer, but vmax, nosler, etc points.  I Don't think I will see many shots around here past 300 to 350 yards so the heavy rounds wont be necessary.  To my knowledge this gun is a 1 in 9 twist.  Is that correct?  I know that was a lot of typing for two basic questions but I just get so excited about seeing a chuck shred or better yet a muskrat turn into a depth charge in my pond this spring.

That's what I use all the time. Works great in my .223 Handi.

When I'm not loading my own ammo for my .223, I go through Roy Tipton of T's Guns & Ammo, Inc. He's based in TX and loads some mighty fine ammo. I don't know what variations he offers, but I was picking up 100 rounds of 55gr Bal. Tips traveling at 3100fps for $34. That's not much more than the White Box ammo, if my math is right. The white box comes in a box of 50 for around $15, yes? So, that's $30 for 100 hp ammo. And I was getting sub MOA accuracy with his loads.

Welcome aboard!! Yup, the 45gr JHP Winchester whitebox 40 round value pack sold at Walmart is about the best choice to start with, it shoots very good in both 1:9" and 1:12" barrels. Another one to try is the Ultramax reman 40gr Nosler BT or the Blackhills 52gr match. All of them have had good reports, but the Win white box is the gold standard for 223 Handi accuracy, and not expensive for sporting ammo. ;)

Thanks for all the info.  I now have some new things to look at while I am sitting here at work today. Just need the weekend to get here to buy a few different boxes and see what happens.  Thanks again.

I also have had great luck with the Winchester White box 45 grain ammo, aboiut $14 for 40 rounds at Wal Mart, but be sure to get the HP's if you can instead of the solids/FMJ's, they have shot better for me and others here also. I also have had great luck with Remington Core Lokt 55 grain SP's, 3 shot groups under a dime in my standard barrel 1:12 Handi .223 with that stuff, have fun!!!....<><.... :)

I guess I will echo the remarks on the WWB 45gr JHP's.
If you reload, I have found the lighter V-Max's to shoot excellent too.

I agree. I have also used the Remington Core-Lokts with decent groupings, around 1"
If you want to go that route. I haven't tried reloading them as of yet. But I believe there is potiential there for a 55gr SP option. Plus they are usually cheaper than many offerings out there..

And back strap - ya never know till you try them. Pick up a box or 2 and see for yourself  :)
I haven't shot the Remington 45gr HP, but I know of some Handis that have liked them as well for the Federals.

Welcome.  :D

Another vote for the Winchester WB 45 gr.  They shoot best in both my Handi and Ultra .223's.  The Handi also shoots American Eagle 50 gr Flat Base HP just as well.  The Win WB has been a bit scarce lately. I've not seen it in several Walmarts between Lavale (Cumberland), Md and Reading Pa. in months.  Just before the holidays, the clerk at the Ephrata, Wal Mart told me that its not on their inventory list. I did find some at Bass Pro in Harrisburg last weekend, they had four boxes.  Backwoods Outfitters in Columbia usually have the American Eagle for a decent price.

Have fun  ;D

Well dang, I can't find any WWB in 223.  Neither of the two Walmarts have it.  Sportsmans WH has 22-250 and 308, but no 223.  So I bought 400 rounds of RPMCYB because Sportsmans did have that.  It is 45 gr HP also, so should be about the same as the WWB.

By the way, RPMCYB stands for Remington PMC Yellow Box.  ;D

Game_Stalker, I would be willing to buy and try 100 rounds of that Roy Tipton's ammo you talked about if that price is shipped, but I do believe with shipping it would not be cost effctive Please let me know if that is the shipped price, Thanks ....<><.... :)

First, to clear something up, what I bought was Remington UMC Yellow Box, not PMC.  As Tim mentioned in another post, PMC is no longer.

Also, I stopped by Sportsmans WH this afternoon and noticed some HSMOB, or HSM Orange Box.  It is manufactured in Missoula, MT.  I bought 223 with 52 gr HP Boat Tail.  $15.99 for 50.  Anybody tried this?

HOPEFULLY I will be able to shoot a little tomorrow and be able to report on both of these.  As well as my newly weather-seal pressure bedded gun.   ;D

I just want to make a comment on choices in ammo.  I have tried some of the wwb ammo and it worked real good, only problem is that they don't make it any more. I had two fairly intelligent guys at local shops tell me that as of right now there is no more being manufactured. >:(  I have had great results with the ultramax ammo( fmj not nosler bt yet, it is on the way) Remington power lokdt shot really nice groups at 100 yds.  Black hills 52 gr match v-max rounds are unbelievable in my handi.  Final annalysis, I will buy more ultramax at $11.00 for 50 for target shooting in the yard.  And will probably spend the extra cash for the black hills match v-max rounds.  It shot a group of five holes tounching inside a target as big as a qaurter 100 yds.  The only thing that will change my mind is if I get equal results out of the ultramax nosler 40 gr.  Around the yard is one thing, but when the shot counts and that little varmint is just sticking his head up, I will spend some extra money to make that shot.  Every now and then you still just get what you pay for.
