Scope magnification recommendation?
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:44:12 AM »
OK...what would be a good magnification range for a 375 H&H?  I was thinking 2-7...good FOV at the low end, with enough magnification at the top for accurate shooting out to 200 yards.  What do you guys think?

2-7 is a good choice if you don't mind a scope with a bell, a 1.5-5 Leupold is nice if you like the straight tubes.  The 2-7 will likely be less expensive.  My brother and I were clanging a 12" gong at 300 meters a few weeks ago with his 45-70 Marlin guide gun with his 2-7 Leupold, and we never turned the power over 2.  If it's primarily a big game gun, I don't think you need a monster scope.

Mine now wears a 1.5-5 Leupold and had a 3x M8 Leupold on it for many years. I'd go with any good brand of 2-7 without hesitation.

Yeah...I'm looking real close at the Leupold VX-III in 1.75-6x32mm.  Website said actual magnification is 1.9 to 5.6, with an eye releif of 4.4" to 3.2".  That'n looks like it'll do.  Doubt I'll need higher magnification than 6 with a 375.

One thing I forgot to mention, if you aren't used to the super low powered 1-  1-1/2 power scopes is that you very likely will be able to see quite a bit of the rifles barrel on the lower settings.  For me this makes for quick target acquisition at closer ranges, but some find it distracting.  On 1X I can see the rear sight on my .416.

I have a 1.5-5x20 vxlll, on  my .308 have not had any problem on big game out to 250+ yards, real world usage not just at the range, IMHO to may people over scope there guns, its just not necessary

OK...it's final now.  Got the Leupold VX-III in 1.75-6x32mm.  Also got the Talley quick disconnect rings.  Took the scope out of the box, went in the backyard, and had a look-see.  Very clear and bright.  At the 6x everything is brought in nicely.  For my taste, 6x will be perfect.   :)

Used one of them Segway reticle levelers...I know, a plumb bob'd do just fine, but the Segway worked great.  No qualms about money spent there.  Also got a laser boresighter.  After mounting / dismounting the scope a half dozen times, crosshairs are always spot-on with the red dot across my garage.

Once the weather stops threatening, I'll head out to the range.

I've found it addictive, will227457.  Don't know what your base is, but I've had no prior experience with magnums.  Fired 303 British down to 223, with 12 gauge slugs thrown in.

Just recently got it (Jan '07).  Still working a bug out.  Iron sights were hitting way low...just got lower sight posts from CZ.  Highly doubt it's the rifle; it cloverleafs, albeit very low.  I'm certain it's how I arrange the sight picture.  Haven't had the opportunity to fire it since 'cause of this stupid rain.  When there's a couple days' break in the weather I'll be sighting both irons and scope.  More shootin'!!!

Once it's sighted I'll post a pic of a target.  Might be a while...
