Scope Base for H&R mod 157
« on: January 13, 2007, 07:12:05 AM »
Gents,

I could use some help finding a scope base for a red dot scope that I want to mount on my H&R 157.  I just about ordered the Weaver #82 like I have on other Handis but, thankfully, checked the dimensions on the cross bolt of the red dot scope.  The distance between the grooves on the Weaver #82 is about 4 3/16 inches which doesn't present a problem when mounting a conventional scope because the scope can be slid forward or backward in the rings.

The red dor scope (BSA) has integral "rings", or clamps, with a fixed distance of 2 1/16 inches.  I've checked Midway and Mid South but all they have listed for the H&R or NEF is the Weaver #82.  I could probably make my own but would prefer to buy one off the shelf.....any suggestions?

Cut the notches where ya need em with a file, hacksaw or dremel burr, very easy to do in the aluminum base, I've done it several times when I needed a base right now and didn't have an H&R base, which has slots on 1" centers, so even it would need to be modified.

Tim...Guess that's what I'm going to need to do.  Just checked Weaver's web site and couldn't find anything either.

Thanks,

Try the edge of a small rectangular file, I have used them to cut the notches on these rails where needed and they worked fast and easy....<><.... :)

I did the same thing...just used the abrasive chop saw that I use in my blacksmith shop..being careful not to cut either groove too deep.

Whew!!  Got a standard scope rail, cut it shorter and filed the groove for the cross bolt on the red dot scope clamps.  Filing that groove is a real pain, really makes one appreciate milling machines.  The end result is that I have the red dot mounted but not sighted in yet.

I think I'm really going to like this red dot, I can see well enough through it to hit something again.  With red dots becoming less expensive (mine was $30) I suspect that there will be a lot more shooters using them instead of the traditional leaf sights.  Someone, like Weaver, ought to jump on the band wagon and start making mounting bases for them.

For all H&R rifles manufactured before 1973, which includes the models 157 and 158, the proper Weaver base is #60A.
