Help with Smith 25 not always going boom
« on: January 04, 2007, 02:27:25 AM »
I recently acquired a Smith 25-5, 45LC, 4".  The previous owner had it hard chromed, it looks like a brushed SS.  Also the trigger and hammer are polished like nickle.  Very smooth and a light trigger pull.  The problem is occasionally I pull the trigger and the hammer falls and nothing, only slight indention into primer.  If I reset cylinder and retry, then it works fine.  I am suspecting that the trigger pull is so light that it is not allowing the hammer to fall hard enough.  Seems I heard that these are related.
Any thoughts?

I would check the screw for the mainspring first. If it backs out then you will get light primer hits. If it is in tight, I would call Wolff Springs and get a new mainspring.

Would also be the mainspring is light. Try a progressive spring grind. I've used a couple in 'J' frames and they are great. Seem to hit harder while pulling the same?? You might also check for free movement of the striker and no burrs etc. in the pin channel in the frame..
