new and confused
« on: January 03, 2007, 11:08:14 AM »
I just got a new .223 ultra varmint and I'm real excited.  The first gun I got when I was a kid was a pardner .20 gage and I have been a big fan of the company ever since.  I really like the gun and I want to make sure I do everything I can to make it shoot accurately so I don't get frustrated.  I have tried to do searches under this forum so I wouldn't ask the same questions that have been asked a million times but it won't let me (hence the "confused").  I have shot about 30 rounds through it and cleaned it between every 5 shots or so.  The best group I got was about .75 inches but most were way over that - up to 3+ inches.  I was shooting real cheapo 55 grain ammo (winchesters).  I think it is the new model with the 1/9 twist (I say that because it has the extractor not ejector and that's new, too)  Could someone tell me either how to search the forum or how to improve the accuracy?
Thanks

Welcome to GBO!! The search is disabled until the web master fixes it. Read the FAQs and Helps sticky, lots of info there to help you make it shoot well!!

First off Welcome , the search is still off due to programing problems . The 223 will shoot very well m you may want to look in the FAQs at the top of the page for lots of helpful info on getting the ,ost of your rifle . the most inportant thing is to make sure it is cleaned well , there is a lot of gunk and crud in it from the factory , most can not even be seen.

Try the Win. White Box 45 grain  and the Rem 55 grain , these seem to shoot the best for fractory ammo . Hand loading can get it even better .

Thanks for the info, guys.  I'm sure I'll be here often - reading and asking.  I must be nuts, but I don't see the FAQ's at the top of the page.  I've actually found it, but it wasn't at the top of the page.

Welcome pfettig ...

Are you shooting off bags or a bipod ? Be patient with the rifle ... the more you shoot, the better it will become and you should get sub-MOA groups. There is nothing wrong with consistent MOA groups if you are using factory ammo.
