barrel break in
« on: January 01, 2007, 02:14:08 PM »
I tried the search feature but it told me I cant use the search feature.  So if this has been asked before, and it most likely has,  how do you break in a rifle barrel?  In the past I used to shoot one clean and so forth for about 5 to 10 rounds.  I would then do 3 shot groups and clean.  However, lately I have seen where many folks think this is a waste of time money and barrel life (including McMillan).  I have a new Ruger All weather in 30.06 that I am ready to take to the range.

I also think it is a waste of time. I take my new guns out and just shoot them. I let the barrel cool between shots when I am shooting for groups. But as far as a barrel break in, it will do it on it's own. I always clean my guns after a range secession but never during. Unless I am shooting black powder.  Over 30 years of shooting guns and doing it the same way and I have not had any problems with accuracy from my guns. I have a lot of guns that shoot MOA and some that will shoot sub MOA groups.  ;D

I do the same as Redhawk1........I clean them good when they come out of the box and shoot them......I think the biggest thing is not to shoot the barrel hot.......
