Laminant stocks,colors,camo
« on: December 28, 2006, 05:10:16 AM »
Quick note:  I recently posted a picture of my Hornet stock (black/gray/yellow'ish color combo).  Happened to stop by my local gun shop yesterday with it and was asked by a patron "won't the fox and groundhogs see that".  Good question and the answer is no.  There was extensive scientific studies done in the 1980's that showed fox, dogs, coyotes see limeted color as compared to humans.  They see green, yellow and orange as the same.  What they do diferentiate fairly well is shades of violet & blue.

I have not read actual studies in regards to marmots/woodchucks as I have dogs.  But from hunting them avidly "old style" walking & stalking rather than long range my observations are this.  They spot an all white tee shirt or all black easy and like above with dogs and "blue" I am superstitious about wearing blue jeans and prefer hiking/cargo tan, olive type pants or shorts.  But I have worn a burnt orange ball hat many times (maybe like dogs "green, yellow, orange the same to them???") many times with confidance sneaking in.

So in a nuttshell.............."no" they don't see it any differant than green.  It's the blues, violets, & reds you have to watch out for along with your backdrop with black & whites.  It's mostly movement more than camo.  Camo helps break things up but for most varmints in most landscapes excluding all white "snow" the color pattern of the camo excluding blues & red along with how black & white is used don't matter.  Orange & yellow is seen the same as green.  :)  In some hunting areas with population its better to be a little safe with some orange or yellow than sorry and camo does not hide movement which varmints are keen at picking up on even at long distance.
