Hello people. Glad to find some good brains to pick. I am sold on purchasing an H&R centerfire rifle. I really like the Choate and storage style pistol grip stocks but I don't really favor the storage forend. I feel like the AteeI products are not for me. So the questions are..

Can I get a survivor with its little bull in 308 with a choate stock instead of the storage stock?
What about a stainless survivor?
Or, am I looking a a totally custom set up.

Ideally I'd like to shoot a high power round through a short/lightish barrel with a lean, pistol grip stock. All in stainless? As is, the Survivor is near perfect really but I just like that Choate a little better. Without a scope it'd be nice under seven lb's. Please advise on a setup so I can order this dang thing.

I bought the survivor 308 and replaced the stock with the Choate stock and forend. Forend made it an MOA rifle.

The Survivor stocks, fore and aft, ARE Choate stocks. The buttstock is the Survivor model, and the forend is the Store-Arm.

You could get the Stainless Handi-Rifle™ in .30-06 (no .308)

It has standard Choate synthetic stocks, but you could replace the buttstock with the Survivor version and keep the forend..

Welcome aboard Survivor! As gimphunter stated, the Survivor stock is a Choate stock as are all synthetic stocks from H&R. The Choate Varmint stock is the stock that Poncaguy refers to which has a skeletonized butt and wide forend with bipod t-rail. There is no stainless version of the .308. The only way to get the .308 bull barrel is to buy a Survivor or have a barrel fitted to your SB2 frame. Getting the Varmint stock would be another purchase or trade later. Or you could buy one of the fluted Ultras in .204, 223, 22-250 or 243 and then send the frame in for the .308 BB.

They should offer the Survivor in stainless, if they are going to offer stainless in anything at all.

I thought about the Handi conversion and I saw that stainless Ultra Var. Pretty sweet. The more I think about it the more I like the size of the Survivor. The BB is the shortest barrel so I guess I'll consider the aftermarket Choate. I wonder what the weight difference is between all of those Survivor stocks. Does the BB in general compensate for short barrel accuracy by being thicker and thus more rigid? Is that the idea?

Puncaguy, how's the recoil? Did you put on a pad or was it ok?

I like the idea of a little pack rifle; almost break down-esque. Plus there's something about the 308 that's drawing me in as a 243 shooter. How hard would it be to fabricate a wooden pistol grip for it. It appears to join with the stock with one nut? I think that would be another fun project if the rifle would adapt to it. One day I'll leave well enough alone...maybe. THNX

I took my 308 Survivor and put a regular stock and fore end on it

Makes an accurate "poor mans sniper" now

I really like the Survivor idea as many of my lighter rifles have survivor stocks on them now

But for what it is worth in my opinion that bull barrel makes the gun too heavy to be a pack gun.

I put the Choate stock and forends on my 45-70, 308 Survivor and 22-250 bull barrel. It allows me to shoot the 45-70 from the bench without killing my old injured 65 year old shoulder. It really helps with recoil, and the forends improve accuracy in my Handi's.

Kid, are you saying the BB is heavier than a standard? I could see them being the same weight but heavier, really? Does H&R flute the BB? Probably not. But the stock Survivor is only like 6.5#. How could it be heavier with a longer barrel. Seems like the balance would be a little better with the shorter barrel. Does anyone know the weight differences between those two Choate's? Have a safe holiday everyone.

All of the fluted Ultras are 24" bull barrels and there is no stainless Ultra, just SS Handis with nickel plated frames and synthetic monte carlo stocks. If you want a stainless Ultra, you'll have to buy an SS Handi, and the get a stock for it. Bull barrels measure approx .800" at the muzzle, standard contour barrels .620"-.700". The Survivor stock set weighs about 1lb-9oz, the Choate Varmint stock weighs 2lbs-3oz, the forend alone weighs 10oz without the adapter.

P.S. One more quick question, no pun intended. Is that a generic pad on the survivor or do these actually have a decent recoil pad on them? What about the choate? THNX again. Happy hnew year!

The Survivor has no pad, just hard plastic. The Choate Varmint has a fair pad, but it's no Limbsaver!

Tim's right, the Survivor buttstock is hard plastic. It's also narrow and rounded, so it hurts your shoulder, and short, so your eyebrow can reach the scope better. The below Limbsaver pad is the one you want for the Survivor stock.

The Choate Varmint stock has two ½" spacers that can be removed to change LOP. If you order the rifle at Walmart, they'll tell ya how much it is before you order it. They used to have em online, but not much now.

1. The Choate Varmint stock has two spacers that you could remove, then slip the Limbsaver pad on.

2. The Varmint stock costs more than the Survivor stock. See the Midway link above. Sorry, but I can't give you a good idea on the prices of the two rifles. You might check Gunbroker.com or Wal-Mart.

Walmart still has the fluted Ultra on their web site, it's $285, the SS and Survivor are less.

I feel pretty good about this whole process. I will now profess my vanity and say to you all, thank goodness you didn't have to shop for a car with me or christmas shopping for that matter. I have become my grandmother, bless her. Anyway, I think a stainless handi with a choate var stock is in the future for me. Those spacers will help fit that sucker right to me. Unless someone has a real preference for 308 over 30 06 the balistic comparisons I've read don't really convince me one way or the other. Thanks for all the great input. good night.

Of course I have one more Q. You all were so insightful I feel spoiled. I got a great SS quote from walmart=$252 as is. Should I order the Choate through them too or to my house? Will I need a Smith to swap stocks or is it an easy home fix? Thanx again. Good to know smart people are so social

I don't know that you can order a Choate stock from WM, but you can direct from Choate or H&R. Changing the syn stock out requires a 9/16" socket and about 12" of extension. The Choate stock has a socket head screw.
