358 JDJ--Bullets and loads!! Help me!
« on: February 08, 2007, 06:04:50 PM »
I just purchased a 358 JDJ from CO_Shooter!  ;D  I'm excited but know comes the big work.

What bullets do you recommend for this cartridge?  It was a 35 Rem. barrel rechambered to the 358 JDJ.  It has an overall barrel length of 14" including the muzzle brake.  It comes with one box of 225 gr. Nosler Partitions.  I plan to use it for mule deer/elk.  I was looking around for this caliber and saw some neat bullets.  Nosler has a 225 Balistic tip, Hornady has that 180 gr interlock SP for single shot pistols plus they have to 200 gr SP.  Sierra has there game king in 225 gr. and Remington has it's famous Core Lokt bullets in a 200 gr bullet-I wonder how that would work in a single shot contender?

Loads--Your recommendations and pet loads would be greatly appreciated!  I have the 2 contender reloading manuals but they do not have the 358 JDJ in it. >:(

If anyone has some trajectories that would give me a more or less idea of how the bullets will travel over certain distances I would be indebted to you!

Thanks for your input and experiences.

Bob

You can contact SSK and obtain load data for this caliber as well as suggestions on favored bullets for it.

Thanks,

I will try them but I would still love to hear what your loads and bullets you all use.  If you have any trajectories I would appreciate it as well.  ;D

Thanks,

Bob

The safest thing would be to contact SSK for the data. Lots of info can be found on the net. Some good and some bad. JD has told me that there are some DANGEROUS loads floating around. Good Luck. I have 7 SSK barrels and the 358 isn't one of them.

JD will only give you the info IF he made that barrel. There are some barrels around that SHOULD be called 358/444,because some other guy re chambered them. This is a HEAVY bullet barrel. light pistol bullets do not work well in it. 180's are about the lightest I've found to be accurate and nonexplosive.JD said cast bullets aren't going to work well. He was right so far. I use the 200 grainers in mine ,The Hornadys seem a little more accurate than remington bulk.groups are about 1/2" smaller.A deer would NEVER notice!
I've used 2520, h322 and IMR 4064 powders and others, the named ones were best in MY gun.
Trajectories from a magazine article datedsept/oct 1991(Handloader) page 33 were  muzzle vel. =2250fps
50     100  150     200     250     300 yards
2.12  3.86  3.57    1.06   -3.94   -11.62 inch
velocity
2156-2064-1975-  1887-  1803-   1721 fps
energy
2529-2322-2128-  1948-  1779-   1624 FPE
This IS a hard recoiling round. It will knock deer sideways a step or two.I wish you luck with it!

Minn 1, I too have a 35rem rechambered to 358jdj. I use 53.0grs AA-2520 with rem cl 200gr rn. I seat the slug halfway in the neck(to keep down pressure). It seems to hold well enough. The spent shells fall out of the barrel. Mv is 2300fps. Sighted at 100yds you are 8.35" low at 200yds. Sighted 4.18" high at 100yds you'll on at 200yds and 7.27" low at 250yds(so says Sierra). Jhalcott is right on about the deer. I also have a muzzeltamer and recoil is not a problem for me unless I shoot about 40-50 rounds. BE SURE TO WORK UP ON THIS LOAD!  Pat

I would suspect pretty good... it is an excellent bullet for the money and while I do not have 358JDJ loading  data I'll wager your T/C velocity will be close to the velocity of a 20" barreled levergun.
