NO MORE SCOPE KISSES !!
« on: December 16, 2006, 01:12:09 PM »
Hey all can anyone recommend a good scope for my 308 survivor? Right now I have a shotgun scope on it with a 6" eye relief, but it's only a 1 to 4x..

THe last 3-9x I had gave me a kiss, because the eye relief was not more then 2.8", which is why I went to the shotgun scope.. I'm not one for enjoying being cracked in the forehead, when I shoot my guns... Especially with wearing glasses :'(, its a might painful to say the least..

Greatly appreciate your help!!

That would depend on how much money your want to spend, let us know and we'll help ya spend it!! ;D  The Bushnell Banners for about $70 aren't bad for 4-6" of eye relief in a budget scope. For about $190, the Leupold VX1 gets you ~4" of eye relief. The Nikon Prostaff isn't bad for an in between price.

I've found some very good prices on the Leupold Rifleman which works quite well on the heavy kickers.

They say 6" but mine is best at just about 4 3/4 to 5" which is fine for the way the stock fits me .

Got one of those just recently myself.  My BC 45/70 with about 2.5 in. eye relief and a fairly stout load.

Luckily for me I had on a pair of my work safety glasses, otherwise, would've probably had a nice gash, rather then the goose egg I had over my eye.. :o

Either way hurt for three days and couldn't wear my glaases(either kind) because of the lump... This made my job OH SO MUCH MORE FUN to do ::) ;D !!

i know that felling...was huntin a couple years ago . leaning on a tree on a oil lease road.had a great view for a 100 yards 4 the deer to cross,,, decided to lay down with just a little of my upper back and head aginst the tree, with my knees proped up...had the gun butt on top of my shoulder and the barrel on my right knee facing the road where the deer would cross.....90 # doe walks to the road 12 feet in front of me and turns towards me,stops and looks behind her.i just lifted the GUN  sideways up ON my shoulder with right hand ,,cocked hammer with left hand .looked in scope to find the neck and thought to myself <THIS IS GOING TO HURT.> pulledthe trigger with left hand and the light went out for both of us...wore that cut for about a week and a half......but ate that doe for about a month.... ;D

well lets hope when you get your first critter with your 45-70 it does not hurt you tuxdad....<><.... :)

I also wore the embarassing half moon cut over my right eye about a year ago after shooting my 45-70 from the bench with a stout load. I tried to ignore the blood running down my nose and dripping onto the bench however it was the looks of the other 2 guys at the range that finally got to me, how embarassing....<><.... :-[

Last time I used a 3x9 Buck Master scope was on my 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter...I got knocked out of a tree because I crawled up the stock a little bit too much... :o :o :o...Yea...I got the buck...but a real nasty cut...as well...Their nice scopes otherwise...I just won't put one on any heavy kickers anymore...

The 3-9x40 Buckmasters has 3.5"-3.4" of eye relief, a bare minimum for a heavy kicker, but with trapdoor loads, should work fine. Shooting from a bench, it could be painful if the scope is mounted just a little too close, doesn't take much. :-\

When looking for an affordable compact with generous eye relief I finally settled on Burris. The Leupold compacts are not very good as far as eye relief is concerned. I have the Burris 4X compact with 5" of eye relief on my huntsman. Could only be better if it were a 1-4X. The short mag in 2-7 or 3-9 still has 4.75", which may work for you. The extra comes in handy when different positions/angles are encountered during hunting. The bench is an ideal, controlled situation.

This thread brings back painful memories revolving around my Handi in .280 Rem. topped with a 3X9 Simmons.  I tried acting nonchalant hoping my shooting bud's hadn't noticed but the trickle of blood running down the side of my snoz gave it away.  Seems I learned my lesson though, I have not crawled up the stock for a repeat performance... yet.   ;)

I guess most of us here don't consider a scope that costs as much if not more than our Handis as being affordable, the 4x20 Burris Shortmag is $200, the variables go up from there. :-\

I know, I have to be careful with the $ too. So I shopped around alot. I got it on ebay for $172. I know it seems like alot, but how much does ruining your hunt and going to the emergency room for stitches cost? Plus it is only 8.4 inches long and helps keep the weight down. It is in quick release mounts, so I hope to be able to use it on other barrels with only a little sighting adjustment. Anyone tried this? If so, how far off is each barrel. It would be nice if it were only elevation changes. I plan on using it on the 5.5 lb 20ga tracker II with 3" sabots, so eye relief will be important.

I haven't seen one in person yet, but Nikon has a new line of "Omega" scopes with 5" eye relief.  I have been very pleased with the Nikons I have.  The lens clarity has been great for the price in my opinion.
