Today I finished a two year long project.
It started two years ago when I found a Ultra 223 "Trappers Association" on the internet. I knew I wanted the stocks, but had no idea what for. Sold the action and barrel.
About 4 weeks ago found a BC on a rifle rack in Billings, from which I knew I wanted the stocks for my 30-30 Carbine. While mounting the stocks on the Carbine, found one of these mercury things in the stock bolt hole. Will use it with the 45-70.
Took the barrel to my 'Smith to have the barrel cut for my style of tru..brush hunting. I already have a 20" 45-70, someday it will be easy to pick up a standard 22", and I knew 26" would be longer then I wanted. So, cut and recrown at 24" was the plan. I also have a Marlin lever 45-70 with a 24" tube, and it should be interesting to compare them.
Got the barrel back last Friday, and started bolting everything together this morning. I already had the Leupold Vari-x-III 1.5x5 and medium height z rings on hand.
All went together as planned. Now, all I need is a break in the cold weather and wind so I can get to the range. Also, its rumored that we might have some late Damage hunts this Jan & Feb. I want this puppy ready to go!
