Winter Rifle League and WGRS-H&R
« on: December 16, 2006, 05:37:26 PM »
I just started shooting this league at the club that I belong to with my nearly stock 45-70 handi.  The course of fire is 10 shots in each position of prone, sitting and standing at 100 yards.  I have changed the rear sight to a peep and had NEF do a 3.5 lbs. trigger job on it when I sent it in for turkey and muzzleloader barrels.  The sight works well but I would like to increase my sight radius as much as possible.  My stepson Eric is giving me a WGRS-H&R sight for Christmas.  I would like to know if I will need a taller front sight or if the WGRS-H&R will have enough elevation travel to overcome the higher position it will occupy on top of the receiver.  In case it matters I am shooting my own handloads comprised of 44.6 grains of IMR 3031 and a 350 grain Berrys RS bullet.

Thanks,
Bob

Welcome aboard, Bob! Please see the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs and Help sticky, download the Williams catalog, on page 18 there's a sight height calculator instruction.

adding sight radius

An extension can be made. This one was done by hand with a propane torch to bend & twist the metal, and a standard drill press for the holes. The bar stock needs to be thicker though. The recoil on the 45 is light compared to modern rifles, and it is easily bent if bumped. One day I intend on remaking it....ya right, if I get the time.

Attaching the extension bar to the barrel where the scope base or other sights went would eliminate more holes and tapping in the barrel and not having to worry about tiny misalignment if you mount it to the butt stock. The barrel in the picture originally had an open sight on a ramp, you can see a pair of set screws way up the barrel. I too wanted a longer sight radius. Since it is a ML, the tang doesn't move around with the relations to the barrel, so new holes where drilled there and tapped for extension. The sight is Lyman or Redmond peep. The other end has a small globe.

Good luck,
Chris

PS: this is a postal match?

No, not a postal match just a club match I believe.  It is scored based on NRA rules though.

Cknerr, I am not sure how that helps me.  The sight you show is not what I am going to be using.  The only question is will I need a taller front sight?  The information contained in the catalog as mentioned earlier looks like it will be of help once I get the rear sight installed sometime after Christmas.  I was just hoping that someone who had already installed this sight arrangement could give me a heads up so I could procure the sight now instead of waiting.

Thanks for the info.

Bob

Bob, part of the problem is that H&R has used different front sights on their rifles over the years, so what works on one may or may not work on another. In the Peep and Firesight link in the FAQs, you can see what height front sight I used with the WGRS on my .45-70. The WGRS measures ~.535" from the bottom center of the sight to the center of the aperture with the aperture at the top of the ramp with the index mark about .170" above the scale, if that helps any.
