After the 150s
« on: December 16, 2006, 03:37:17 PM »
A soon as the 150gr sierras are gone, I'm going to start reloading the 30-30 with 125 gr. HP. I should be able to push the velocity a little above 2600 fps. I've heard that the 125s are a good deer round , plus it makes the 30-30 more than just a 100 yd gun! ;)

The new Lee loading manual has 125gr data useing re-7 at 2600fps.
Also try speer 130gr fp hot core.
Varget and h335 work well.

The 30-30 has always been more then a 100yd round ;) at least more so then the operators of the rifle.

My dayghter took a 200 lb black bear 2 years ago with the Hornady 130 grain SSP bullets out of her stevens 325. Complete penetration and the heart was in pieces. I think the 125's will be great on deer.  Good luck.

I'd try some of the Barnes 130 grain Triple Shocks...just to see how they would do...I just may have to get a 30-30 barrel...and try some of them... since my youngest son has expressed a major desire to hunt with me...I think a nice rig like Swampmans 30-30 would be just Handi-dandy for the young man...excepting having a nice Limbsaver recoil pad installed...

The Sierra 125 HP is probably not the best choice if you want to extend the range past 100 yards.  It has a very low ballistic coefficient and will slow down and drop rapidly.  Pointed bullets like the Hornady 130 SSP or Nosler 125 BTip will fly flatter and carry more energy to a 150-yard deer.  The 125 Sierra will work of course - but there are better long range bullets.
