Seeing that the .45 lc is my favorite caliber (in lever actions and sixguns), that would be a nice addition for me. Does anyone know what we will have to pay for one? I think I saw a MSRP of around $445 or something close to that.

Could the .45 Colt barrel be rechambered to .454 Casull? We could still shoot .45 Colt in it.

IMO the Handi isn't strong enough for factory .454 loadings.

Is the 454 loaded higher than the 500 S&W?

454 Casull pressure is the about the same as the .500S&W, Wayne York is rechambering and reboring a .308 Win Handi barrel to Casull for another member.

The bigger question is about chamber size, the Casull is slightly smaller in diameter than the .45C.

The Casull isn't but .008" bigger than a .270 that's loaded to 64,200 psi.

I reckon the dimensions depend upon your reference.  Ammoguide.com publishes them as exactly the same except for chamber length.

Probably a call to FA would clarify the apparent discrephancy in the two references.

What the specs are from any source is actually a moot point, what the .45Colt H&R chamber dimensions are is the critical issue. ;) If it's as much oversize as some of the other chambers are such as the 44mag, there would be much to be concerned about.

It's quite possible the Casull will fit without reaming, just like .360 DW fits in the .357 chamber without reaming.

True enough about the chambers with the older barrels...the newer ones are much closer to specs though......Also... the 270 is a 65,000 PSI SAMMI  load...I don't have the conversion tables to say what a .008" difference makes ...but doing the math from the link Quick provided ...the Casull comes out at 57,891psi...so it looks like it should be at least in the ballpark with full pressure loads...and one can always down load them as well... and would be the most prudent thing to do...

But the .270 has more a lot more case to grab the inside of the chamber when it fires.  The back thrust of the .454 will be much higher, and IMO it will strech the frame pretty quickly.  It's all about back thrust in these single shots.

Does anyone know what kind of velocities they're getting in the Handi?  That might be an easier route than rechambering the Colt.

Let me preface by saying, I don't have any rechambered Handis.  That said, I think it might be most prudent to just use a max of Ruger loads in .45 Colt, if one determined it was absolutely necessary to need that much.  Personally, I would use my .45-70 if I needed more than what standard .45 Colt would deliver.

One of the sihlouette techniques is to trim brass so it's exactly the length of the chamber.  That eliminates mismatches in chamber length and allows the cartridge to be custom fit to the chamber.  A .454 Casull could be trimmed until it fits the chamber, which may help maximize the accuracy potential.

Let's not forget that along with the 45Colt BC, H&R is also offering the .444Marlin in a Handi! ;) I think I'd rather have one of each before a .454 Casull!! ;D
