a new symptom
« on: December 19, 2006, 03:36:51 AM »
A friend of mine gave me a bunch of reloading equipment about 2 months ago. So I said to myself, why not try loading for my  223 and 45-70 Handys. I bought 2 reloading manuals, some IMR3031, some primers and bullets. Then immediately caught the second of the Handy Diseases.  I never saw it coming !  Now I'm having a hell of a good time. I have found some great loads for both calibers , and have some 45-70 loads that make me wonder which end hits harder. My loading bench keeps getting larger.Ther are bullets of all weights,  shapes and sizes on my shelves, and I have already loaded enough ammo to keep me shooting for a couple of weeks. Now i'm thinking of getting some different caliber Handys just so I can try loading for them.   Is ther no end to this madness ?

There is help on the way. I will recommend 3 doctors/specialists that quickly come to mind. There are others that can help depending on what your latest symtoms (needs) are.

1. Dr. Graybeard
2. Dr. quickdtoo
3. Dr. Mac11700

Like a lot of professionals, they can help all or most of your problems but their help does not come cheap. Consider the costs involved an investment and not an expense.

You will know your case is helpless when you start scrounging at the range for brass just to have something to load or worse yet buying a gun of a new caliber just because you found a lot of empties at the range and it would be a shame to let them go to waste.

Yup, I know exactly whatcha mean, up until about 2 yrs ago, I had never touched any reloading equipment, all I had shot my entire life was factory ammo, then I bought a few Handis including a .45-70 and the great fellas here talked me into reloading for it, first it was the Lee Loader, then I wanted to do more and bought an Anniversary kit, then....then....Recently I found a heck of a good buy on a new RCBS 500 S&W die set for $12.50 and 2 boxes of 350gr Hornady XTPs for $20, so I had to buy a .500 barrel to shoot em in!!  I'll let the pics speak for themselves!

Scratch the idea of seeing Dr quickdtoo .... he'll be no help with your problem.

Yep. Started handloading in 1970 and it quickly became part of my household. Everytime we moved (25 years of military movements) we had to plan on an extra bedroom just for my hobby. As Tim pointed out, there must be dozens of reasons to pick up the next caliber to load for. I just did a quick count and found 30 different set of dies in my "play" room. And I'm sure I've let at least 20 sets go after I was thru with them. But I don't do as much reloading/plinking as I did before moving back to Montana. Now I spend more time in the field. To answer you question: "I'm afraid there is no end to this madness".

Well put. And it's not to hard to convince the Mrs when you tell her that there is gunpowder in the house to get her attention, enough so she wants it far away from her ;D
Reloading is an awesome hobby. Relaxing and rewarding. I owe a lot to several members here for helping me get my feet wet ;)
Enjoy

I would have answered sooner, but I was in the bsmnt loading some 60 grn Nosler partitions for the 223............. My wife is used to having powder in the house because of my yrs of muzzleloading,so thats ok. But I have already started bringing brass home from the range because " it would be a shame to see it go to waste".  I,m doomed . I can only hope that any more sicknesses I catch are as enjoyable as these two are. And that those in the ward with me are as much fun as you guys.

Has anyone used Handy rifle ownership as grounds for divorce yet ?   Ther's a first time for everything ,you know.  And if i'm the first.......well , I'll probably miss her. For a little while anyway....until I get to the range.

According to his song, Brad Paisley chose fishing over his woman. Maybe, we can get someone famous to do a song about Handi's.
