The pix here are my first attempt at customizing a Swedish Model 96. The barrel was cut to 24 inches and had the sights removed. A target crown was machined and the stock comes from Richards Microfit. I would like to learn more about making the stock a little more glossy. Right now it is finished with Birchwood Casey Tru-oil and polished. I plan to go over it with Rottenstone to see if I can get more gloss.
 The Pic of the one on top is it.


That only took 6 months!! Here is another pic...The scope has been removed and am waiting on funding for a new Nikon.

Aardvark - be careful with that scope.  Anything imported through Chicago is liable to be somewhat anti-gun flavored and might make ya cross-eyed.  

Here's a test - use the scope (not mounted on the rifle) to check out a well endowed Lady - if ya can't see that she's carrying a pair then you have onna dem chicagoese mono-ocular scopes which might limit your, ummmm, perspectives (lololol).  Mikey.

Aardvark......I've spent the last month or so refinishing a Marlin stock with Birchwood Casey Tru-oil.......I'm using an air brush, and have a very Glossy finish..........Still got a few coats to go before I'm done, but it's just about there!

I think you can get Tru-oil in a spray can......have you tried that?

I haven't tried polyurethene, but read somewhere that you can spray oil based over Tru-oil.........That would surly give a gloss finish........

I sporterized this old 1896 Swede. The stock is the original birch military stock cut down and sanded for HOURS. The finish is dozens of coats of Tru-oil.

The trick to getting a high gloss with truoil is to put it on in very thin hand rubbed coats, with steel wool used in between.  The last coat is applied and left as it goes on.  It's called a wet coat.  I do use poly on stocks.  The type I use is a rub on type. Found it at the local wally world.. Apply as I would truoil a few drops and rub it out.  It will really shine.  The normal poly's really need to be sprayed and I don't have the equipment..  Either truoil or poly will shine best if the last coat is applied as a wet coat.  Poly can be polished to a high gloss.  the superfine polish is avalable from Brownells... The FFFFF grade will really shine up a stock..

The Swede I sporterized will group 140 grain bullets into 1.25" groups at 100 yards with most loadings. It does not like light 120 or 129 grain bullets.

hey, great looking rifle! i don't realy care for gloss finishes myself, but that is beautiful; really pulls out the grain in the wood. do all the old swedes look that good?

here's my Swede sporter..used Spray on Tru oil with 00000 steel wool between coats.. final coat is Rottenstone hand rubbed to just clip the final shine a bit. Then hand rubbed with  carnuba wax.
