Whats the difference?
« on: December 02, 2006, 05:10:57 AM »
Im looking on the S&W website and see they have a 29 and 629 Mountain gun in .44 Mag. What is the difference between the two other than the finish?

Model 29 is blued chrome moly metal. Model 629 is stainless steel.

I am assuming that the 29 is not a mountain gun.  If that is the case the mountain gun has a tapered barrel and the 29 does not.  If they are both mountain guns then Graybeard is correct.

They are currently making both blued (29) and SS (629) Mtn. Guns. My assumption was he was referring to those two.

Funny this should come up!  I just picked up a new M29 mountain gun with a blue finish from my dealer.  Ther major difference is the lighter barrel contour.  Here's the link to the model I got: http://fsguns.com/homepage.html

Hello
The Model 29 came in Blued Steel, Nickel Finish and Later was offered as a 629 In Stainless finish. It came in Both round butt and square butt configuration. They had a Baughman red ramp front sight. The model 29 Mountain gun has a tapered barrel, comes in 4" and has a Baughman quick draw front sight. The Mountain gun will also only come in Round Butt configuration. Here is a model 25-13 Mountain gun in .45 Colt Long caliber I recently picked up. The model 29 will look similar but be in .44 Magnum caliber. This one came with Round Butt grip's and I swapped them out for the conversion Target style one's shown on it to allow better Target shooting control. Regards, Hammerdown.

Model 29-2(read blued carbon steel), that I recently sold. Take notice of the barrel thickness and the black powder bevel on the front edge of the cylinder, amoung other differences?

and the Mountain Gun629-4(read stainless steel):
