500 S&W HandiRifle handloading ?
« on: November 30, 2006, 06:48:12 AM »
Howdy. I have gathered everthing to load my own 500SW's. I have H110, H322, and H335 powders on hand. I was wondering if anyone had any advice before i start. My first bullets are the 325gr Speer UnicoJHP. Any input will help. thanks.

Have you found published data for H-322 or H-335?  Those are rifle powders. I thought some of those powders should work good.  I am planning on handloading for my 500 as well.  I am looking for lower pressure loads, midrange, but I dont really want to go to the fast burning pistol powders.

Please post your results.

I am shooting 10 grains of Unique with 420 gr lead gc bullets.  They are very comfortable to shoot and very accurate.

I bought that magazine, I dont recall any use of "rifle" powders.  I think IMR/H 4198 would work great in this cartridge.  Sort of a modernized 50-70 load.

The only rifle powder listed in the Taffin article is 5744.

Is H110 a rifle powder?

H110 is primarily used in cartridges such as 357 or 44 magnum, and of course other magnum pistol loads.  I suppose that there is also data for the 410 shotgun.

I was unaware of 5744, I will have to check it out and see where its burn rate falls.  Thanks for the correction.

I am working on some loads with H110. So far they have shot as well as the other powders I have used such as H4227 and Lil gun. H110 seems to be equal to Lil gun according to the ballistics from hodgdon. H110 is a lot cleaner though. I also use these powders in my Redhawk .45LC. I have been using Hornady 350gr copper JHP in the 500 and sierra 350 jsp.

I'd like to try the Trail Boss.  It seems interesting in many calibers.

I emailed Hodgdon asking for rifle data hoping they might have a suggestion for one of their Extreme rifle powders, they don't. :(

is all there is.  You will just get slightly higher velocity with the
rifle but the pressures will be the same.

Thanks for the input quickdtoo. I used 43gr of H110 and the Speer 325gr unicore JHP. I fired 12 rounds to set the sights and get the feel of the 500Handi. Recoil was similar to a 12 gauge with field loads. 3 shot groups with open sights ran about 3 inches at 100yds. I put an old scope on to check accuracy, the scope elevation adjustment is messed up, but I fired two shots that touched, just hit about 10 inches low. I have a new 2.5x scope on the way and some Sierra 400gr SP's. This is fun.  :D
