H&R Handi vs. H&R Ultra Varmint
« on: December 02, 2006, 04:58:22 PM »
Hey all, first time poster here.  I've been lurking for a while.  My wife wants to get me a new gun for Christmas.  I've had my heart set on a Handi-Rifle in .223 for a while.  I want if for varmint/predator hunting a plinking.  I'd also like to get the Huntsman Muzzleloader barrel too.  I really want a bull barrel, I just wish they made one in stainless.  Is there any real difference between the regular Handi-Rifle and the Ultra-Varmint besides the stock and 2" difference in barrel length?  Can I get a new muzzleloader barrel with either reciever?  Any input would be great.

Welcome aboard!! But more importantly, what's your secret to having a wife that "wants" you to get a new gun??? Please share!!! ;D

For current production Ultras, the stock is the only difference, older models had much nicer finishes on the frame and barrel, but that's not the case much any more.

You've got 2 choices in .223 Ultras, there's the 22" standard contour Ultra Hunter and the 24" bull barreled Ultra Varmint. The same options are available in the Handi, but the bull barrel is a 22" instead of 24". There's also a 20" Superlight barrel.

A hunstman barrel could be fitted to any of them IF they still make them, there's a possibility that they'll be discontinuing muzzleloader barrels next year, but that hasn't been confirmed yet.

Well, I think my wife likes it when I go hunting jor shooting, because she gets the house to herself or gets to go shopping.  I e-mailed NEF and they will discontinue the Huntsman but still offer the barrels in the accesory program.
