diffrence between extractor & ejector
« on: November 30, 2006, 11:44:46 AM »
wee! another noob question : )

Im reading alllll this talk about how Handi isnt makeing ejectors anymore (what i have), and they switched to extractors.

And i see alot of people not likeing the extractors...i dont get what the extractor looks like or how you use it..

Its supposta stop the problem of stuck shells though, right?

Thank you,
Mike~

The extractor is a finger in the breech that pushes the cartridge out a little way.  They are the old tried and true way for break actions to let you remove the shell.  An ejector throws the shell free of the chamber by camming a spring when opened.  A sticky shell will sometimes not slide enough to fly out; a REALLY stuck shell can have it's rim or extraction groove deformed or cut by an extractor.  Cheap guns usually have extractors, expensive ones ejectors, even up to ones that can recognize the difference in a spent shell (shotgun Hull) and throw only the empty.  First met Rocket on a different board, understood where he is coming from.  We both came over here--didn't realize there was a Handi forum.

I wouldn't say cheap guns have extractors, TCs use extractors, have you priced an Encore lately? :D

Haven't handled an Encore.  Something about the looks just doesn't do it for me, and you are right, they are pricey.  Late brother had a Contender in .35 Rem.  Remember how hard it kicked.   when he died we sold it (probably got took) and some of the money went into a .243 Handi we still have and love.

Quick, I think what kennyd is refering to about cheap guns and extractors is what I refer to at times. I also agree completely with his statement "Cheap guns USUALLY have extractors, expensive ones ejectors, even up to ones that can recognize the difference in a spent shell (shotgun Hull) and throw only the empty."
Inexpensive early single shots, mostly shotguns and some rimfires came with extractors. Many times on the shotguns you could pay more (hence more expensive) to get the fancier ejectors. I also believe the extractors on the H&R/NEFS are "cheaper" to produce than the former ejectors.
I also agree with him on the look's of the Encore not appealing to him, I dislike thier odd unbalanced look also, but as we all have heard, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...<><.... ;)

MSP, Owning and having looked at two versions of the extractor, I don't believe it's any cheaper to make than the ejector, I'd say it takes more machine work to make it, specially the first version. ;)

I agree with it has nothing to do with cost. You can get your Double Rifles in which ever one you want.I had an H&R in 243 that would threw the cases in the weeds. :D Now I have a new 45-70 that just gives me the case.  :)They both work well.Dave.

We all forget that there are a lot more complaints nationwide than what we see here on the forum, H&R has had to deal with those complaints of stuck brass or flying brass, they've eliminated the issue with extractors, so even if it costs a little more to make an extractor barrel, the likelihood of that rifle coming back for repair related to brass ejection is gone, which saves them money and keeps production costs down since they don't have to work on it twice! The way I see it, it's all good.  We just have to learn to deal with it just as we do with every other change in our lives. ;)

In this day and age of frivolous law suits, think about when someone looses an eye when an ejector equipped rifle kicks a spent case out. :o Don't think they haven't thought of it!!

Extractors = cheap?   I'll be sure to tell my Uncle Reed his $20K+ English made 500 nitro express double rifle is cheap. lol

I personally find ejectors to be "cheap", but thats my opinion.  I make it a point to find extractor guns over ejectors.  But hey, each to their own.
