quickdtoo, tell me about the 405

I already have a 357 Mag, 38-55 and a 500 S&W.  I think this is the type of chambering (rimmed and straight wall) that i want in all my handi's.  Can you tell me about your time and experience with the 405 Winchester? I have a chance to buy a second 38-55 barrel at a good price that would be a candidate for reboring.

It's a pretty straight forward rechamber and rebore, the ejector wasn't an issue as both are rimmed cartridges, hopefully a current barrel with extractor won't be a problem either. I couldn't get back to my original range report in Aug '05, the forum software won't let me.

Mine is throated for the 350gr Barnes XFB, but I never got it to shoot good, but it does shoot the Hornady 300gr SP at 2435fps with a healthy dose of Benchmark, cases started sticking above 56.5grs, sticking shouldn't be a probkem with an extractor barrel and throated shorter, it should be capable of a little more velocity.

I have some 300gr Barnes XFBs that I want to try, also ordered some 265gr Beartooth WLNGC cast bullets to shoot for fun.
Brass is readily available from Hornady usually, although there was a problem getting it when I wanted it, so stock up, it's a seasonal run thing from what I understand.

Hope this helps,

Tim

I saw an episode of tc's game trails (i think that was it) yesterday and Larry Weishun was hunting with an encore in 405 on the Milk River in Montana. Larry makes reference to the Teddy Roosevelt preference for the round.  He shot a buck from a bluff looking down into an oat field and you can see the bullet in the video on it's way to the deer.  It is pretty cool footage.
