GM Service Tec's // I need Help !!!!!!!!
« on: May 11, 2007, 12:50:37 PM »
My wife has a 93 Chevy Lumina APV that will not start , so far i have replaced the fuel pump , dist. cap & rotor , coil , fuel pressure reg. , master control relay and the ECU and still no luck .

Please give me some ideas on what to do next , it does NOT have a crank pos. sen. so i know that is not the problem .

The injectors will spray fuel and it has a OK spark .   ???  >:(

I am about at my breaking point with this thing .

Have you hit a big pothole or something along that line? some of the cars had a fuel safety shut off too keep from feeding fuel to a fire in case of a wreck. there is a reset button for it..not sure where in your case but some are in the trunk. Have a good day and good luck......Bill

Instead of just throwing parts at it in a attempt to make it run again.

Why didn't you take it to PEP boys or one of the other auto parts stores that has a hand held diagnostic tool.

They could have scanned the computer and read the codes and gave you a better idea of what was wrong.

I'm a little tough on Shade Tree Mechanic's = but my guess would be that the check engine light was on.  As long as it was not flashing before it gave out - it is most likely emissions.

A computer only goes bad about 1% of the time / yet it gets blamed for 50% of all the problems.

Same with a fuel pump.  If you keep the filter changed, it might go bad after 250,000 miles.

There are no more points, plugs and condensers.

When you have a problem, the best thing to do is get the problem fixed before it becomes a bigger problem.

Ignoring the check engine light and hoping that it is just the 02 sensor is just a accident waiting to happen.

Since you can't drive it to PEP Boys, check around you probably know someone that owns a handheld diagistic computer.  Several of my friends own them.  One of those will usually tell you exacitally what the problem is.  With today's cars with all the electronics a computer is the only way to find the guilty parts.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

BEFORE you buy anything you should have pulled the codes. On a GM vehicle that uses OBD1 such as your APV the only special tool you need is a paperclip to pull the codes.

Quote
For GM domestic vehicles made before 1995, the diagnostic connector is located under the dash panel by the driver side. To get the check engine codes to flash in your dash panel, use a jumper wire or a paper clip and connect terminals A and B of the diagnostic connector. Turn your ignition key on with engine off and the codes should start to blink. All codes should start with code 12 which is one long flash followed by 2 short flashes. This code 12 means the diagnostic system is normal and will repeat itself continuously if there are no trouble codes. Otherwise, code 12 will flash 3 times before flashing the fault codes.

Now if this doesn't pan out make certain the catalytic converter isn't plugged then if that isn't the case you should check to see if the timing chain hasn't jumped time, a common problem on high mileage vehicles.

Funny this topic comes up as I bought the Pontiac version of your van a couple days ago

Well I don't know if you have the van running yet. I was a tech for a GM dealer for 13 yrs. After that I've worked at a Toyota, Scion, VW & Audi dealer for the last 2 years. I'm an ASE certified master technician, with L1 & X1 qualifications. If you haven't figured it out yet, I will send you a PM with my home phone # & I'll do my best to help you out. There are several things that need to be checked to find out the cause & with my lack of typing skills, would take too long to list. You don't need a scantool to get the codes, you can flash the codes out on the check engine lamp by shorting the correct pins on the dlc connector.
