First flintlock squirrel
« on: October 16, 2006, 07:45:56 AM »
OK, maybe it's pathetic that a semi-grown up like myself should think this is a big deal............

.......but, I don't care.

Was able to connect at over 20 yards offhand with a Pedersoli Frontier in .32 cal. Used a .315" ball, .015" patch and 30 grs. FFFg.

My wife even cleaned it for me...........have to buy her some flowers...........

That's awesome ;)!  I think my next "squirrel rifle" will be a small caliber flintlock.  It just sounds too darn fun!

How much does a .315 ball weigh?
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Handirifle,

I was going to weigh one up for you last night, but forgot.
Bear with me, and I'll find out.

Rum River...Congrats!!!!  And welcome to the fraternity of the best squirrel hunters in the world!

Squirrels are probably my favorite game and hunting them with my 36 flint, Southern Mountain rifle is my favorite way to hunt them.

Unless I'm mistaken a .315 ball weighs in the neighborhood of 45 grs.

Congratulations !

Got my first one year before last with a throttled back .45cal...it fell out of the tree like a brick and brought back memories from the 60's which was the last time I ever shot a squirrel.....going the next couple of Saturdays with a .28ga Flint smoothbore and try them with some #6's.

So don't feel silly about your first Flintlock squirrel...it's actually quite an accomplishment taking one offhand with a Flintlock.

For a few hundred years, hunters have felt the thrill of using a flinter to bring home game for the family.  I think your wife was fantastic to enjoy your day with you by participating in the event.  She is a keeper.  May you have many more memories as good as that which you shared with us.

Finally remembered to weigh one, 48grs weight to a .315" ball.

Sighted in my wife's rifle today. (She'll shoot too, just playing around.) Three shot cloverleafs at 50 yds. Charge was a .535" Hornady swaged ball, 80 grs. FFg Goex, .015" pre-lubed patch, CCI#11 magnum cap. (I don't need the magnums, it's just what we had.)

Good shooting Rum River!!!!! Everything I learned about hunting was from hunting those bushy tail tree citters with my dad. It takes skill to do that and it's cool your wife joined in and you both were excited about it. I still get "gray" fever. It's not the size of the game, it's the hunt. Looking forward to reading future accounts.

Attaboy Rum!

I had a Pedersoli Kentucky in .32 flint that was just a riot on squirrels.  But Pedersoli makes it with a 5/16" ramrod which fits the bore too snug.  I couldn't fit a muzzle protector between rod and bore.  I eventually wore the crown out.  Recrowned it and sold it.

I've been thinking of getting another small bore flint when I scare up the money.  I'll get a .36 if I do it again.

Congrats Rum...He is probably the first of many...I killed a ton a squirrels with a .22 as a kid, and I still remember my first with my Bob Watts flinter back in the '70s...I'm a firm believer that squirrels can teach a kid a whole lot about being a good hunter and a good shot, lessons that many can use in later years when they deer hunt....

I still don't see why squirrels are so often seen as a "learners prey".  Do people learn to hunt turkey by shooting grouse?  Or learn to hunt geese by shooting ducks?  No it seems that people who hunt grouse and ducks will continue to hunt them until the day they die.

But why do squirrels seem to be something you "outgrow"?

The only reason I'm not out there blasting squirrels today is that I sold my .32 and frankly with family commitments I don't have much time to hunt anything.  Given the time and the weapon I'd be out there right now.

Someone once asked a forum such as this what their dream ML hunt would be.  Everyone kept saying big game like elk, grizzly, moose etc.  I said I didn't give a hoot what the quarry was - My dream hunt was to hunt from Mid September 'til Christmas (no work, no school).  I'd spend the whole time popping squirrels if that was all.
