Firing pin doesn't hit primer very hard
« on: October 01, 2006, 02:06:19 PM »
I was shooting my Huntsman barrel for the first time today and discovered that the primer wasn't going off.  I first tried Federal primers and 3 consecutive ones didn't fire.  Then I tried Winchester 777 primers and they started working.  Three shots later, another one didn't go off!  I got the receiver back not too long ago from H&R.  Shouldn't they check this before sending it to me?

I had the same problem with mine when I first got it using CCI primers.  I changed to nobe sport primers and havnt had a problem since.  Also be sure to clean the fireing pin hole well too.  I put a drop of Break Free on the pin and work it back and forth to clean out all the crud after shooting.

Are you holding the trigger all the way back as and after you fire? With the hammer block safeties you have to do this!

Talked to Linda who talked to Gordon today.  In the process of shipping it back. He said he would take a look at it for me.  Nice to get great customer service for a change!

I had the same problem with my huntsman. I tried cci, federal, and winchester primers but made no difference.
The firing pin would only make a small dimple in the primer but would not fire it. But about every tenth time you
tried it, it would fire and the primer looked normal. The gun was brand new with only 10 shots through it when the
problem developed. Since I live in Canada I could not ship it back to NEF but they set me up with a dealer in Ontario.
I shipped them the gun they made an adjustment on the trigger. What exactly they adjusted they didn't tell me
but it worked great when I got it back. I hane not fired it since last season so I hope every thing is still good when
I get it out in a few days.

I'm having the same issues with mine.  I got the .50 cal barrel back a few weeks ago from the factory.  Never had any problems with my .243 barrel.  While at the range for my first sight in session, it wouldn't pop a cap.  Luckily I didn't have a charge in, so I took it apart.  I took the barrel off, put some break free on the firing pin and worked it about 20-30 times, then used a pipe cleaner in the hole.  Not a lot of crud came out, but some did.  Then I pulled the breech plug, looked at the face, and put it back in.  I did set a piece of plastic over the firing pin hole and pulled the trigger; the plastic went flying, so it appeared to have enough force.

I then put a carrier and primer in, pulled the trigger, nothing.  So then I'm thinking that the breech plug face where the carrier sits is too far forward, thus moving the primer surface too far forward.  To test the theory I backed the breech plug out 1/2 turn, put a carier/primer in and BANG!  Then I went to 1/4 turn out and it fired again, but if I went past that, no luck.  The only thing I had in my range box that I could make a shim with was some teflon pipe tape.  I put enough wraps around the base of the plug threads so that when it was tight it was backed off the 1/4 turn I needed.  I then proceeded to snap about 10 caps to be sure, then went ahead and sighted in.

Not wanting to send it back to the factory, I need to get ahold of some metal shim material to make something more permanent.  Once I do, we should be in business.  Anyone see any safety issues with this fix?  If so, please let me know.

Just back the plug out the 1/4 turn. There ar eplenty of threads in there it will not hurt a thing. I always just finger tighten the plug so it is not tightened right down makes it pop every time and easier to get out.

Sent my huntsman back to H&R for the same problem.  They fixed it and had it back to me in a couple of weeks.  They even paid for shipping.  Just ask for a UPS call slip and they will come to your house and pick it up.  Great customer service from H&R.  Oh and now it smacks the daylights out of my primers.

Thanks guys, for both your advice.  Since hunting season is right around the corner I'll use it as is, backing the plug out 1/4 turn.  Once the seasons are over it'll go back to  the factory to get tuned for the long haul.

BTW, this thing shoots great.  1-1.5 inch groups at 100yds w/ 90 grains 777 and a 240 grain Hornady sabot!

I called NEF today and they said it was done and would ship in the next coupld of days.  They "machined the frame" which sounds a litle funny to me considering the problem but they are the experts.  I'll report back when I receive it.

I sent my frame to get a muzzleloader barrel and I had the same problem when I got it back. The solution seems to have a longer plug, which would place the primer and carrier closer to the face of the frame. I solved the problem by getting the 25 ACP breech plug. Haven't had a single misfire since.
