red dot type of sight on 475?
« on: October 17, 2006, 02:37:34 PM »
7.5" 475 Any recommendation as to a red dot that will hold up to it? Ultra-Dot? Has anyone tried any of the "tubeless" red dot sights like the Tru-Glo TruPoint?

I wrote to Zeiss to ask if their Z-Point sight would hold up to .454 Casull.  They said it would.  You might want to take a look at this tiny well-made unit.  It can mount to a weaver base like the SSK Industries TSOB.  I would want to shorten the TSOB to just fit the Z-Point in length.

the true glow may hold up ?  but the parallex is terrable ! if you even move your head a little you change the point of impact.   i bought 2 when they came out , i called the factory to see if i had some defective sights , and they said thats the way the were ! so i returned the sights to them and they refunded my money .

ive had aimpoints on my 44 mag and 2 fa 454 and after firing thousands of rounds they are all working fine. i will have to say that on one the on /off brightness switch became loose , so i sent it back and they repaired in for no charge. i currently owen about 23 red dot sights and have owned probly close to 40 and the aimpoint is the absulate best, for accuracy , and durablity , large field of view, compleatly parralex free at any range , the dot stays on target even if you put the dot on the outside of the lense, the dot is allways perfectly round, and the comp model is compact in size.    bob

bobthenailer, Thanks for the great info! That's the sort of stuff I want to know. Tru-glow has a bad parallex issue; at least they refunded your money. Scratch that one off the list. What about a Trijicon Reflex II ? I like the idea of always on and no batteries. Will they hold up? Any experience with Burris Speed dot? Or their new tactical speed dot? Any good? I've heard some good things about Ultra Dots. Aimpoint is overall best from what I've heard, but also the most expensive. If I go the Aimpoint route, I'll probably go with the 9000SC so I can put 2 rings on it. I really appreciate your input. Thanks.

I put a Redfield ESD red dot scope on my FA in .44 mag. It seems to work fine and allows me to get around 1 1/4 average groups ctc at 50 yds with winchester partition gold ammo. I don't now if its rated for .475 but it appears to be of excellent quality. It's my understanding its modeled after the aimpoint in terms of parrallyx by using a 2 lens system in the front. I don't know if this is absolutely true but it sure looks alot like an aimpoint. These scopes were rather expensive when they came out but went by the wayside when the original redfield went under. You can usually get them for a reasonable price ($75.00-$125.00) off E-Bay when they show up. I personally went with the fixed 4" dot as opposed the variable dot or the variable reticle model. The only thing I will say is that I think the 4" is a little bigger than the specified size it is supposed to be. I also used an SSK TSOB mount when I installed this scope on my FA revolver plus i had the base shortened by the factory about 1/2" since it wasn't necessary. I only used 2 rings to install the scope on mine. If i wanted to put 3 rings i would have had to have an extra slot cut into the base. If you went with the variable redfield esd scope I think you would be unable to put 3 rings on the unit because of space limitations on the tube. Overall I thinik you would be quite happy with one of these units. If I get a chance I'll try and look in the owners manual and see if it says what the scope is rated for as far as caliber size.

3 years ago - I bought Aimpoint for my 454.
After 75 shots - it collapsed.

Got a new one from Aimpoint - and after 17 rounds - it collapsed.

Got the third one - and sold it before I packed it up.

Then I bought a Docter sight  :D:D

Wow, that's the first bad thing I've heard about Aimpoint. Just called Burris's customer service to ask them some questions about their Speed dot and Xtreme Speed dot. They said both of those units are parallex free. They didn't think there'd be a problem on a 475.  Battery life on high is 200hrs.  I'm just trying to avoid wasting money on something that isn't going to hold up or work well.

My good experience is Leupold and Docter.

Good luck!
