Do you cut and/or burn wood?
« on: Today at 06:36:04 AM »
  If so, you could be burning or tossing away so costly material. As you may recall, I have spoken of my grandson who now has my blacksmith shop, is also into fine
    and/or exotic woods..

   Fact being, he is also into tree removal and firewood..  think now, most often, property owners pay to be cut down and removed.  Yes, there is some risk with
    "yard trees"..hidden chains, nails, tree taps etc., but that is part of the game.

   often however, there are some very old and very "knotty" trees to be removed..and sometimes that knottiness can hide treasures.

  An example, some firewood my grandson Jon, brought home for his own fireplace. It was Maple...a great firewood (IMO), but the load had a few "dozy" pieces..

  The dozy pieces are very soft and don't provide much heat anyway..so he uses them to make blanks to be used for turning writing pens for presentations.

  He cuts the wood up, dries it more , then vacuum treats the pieces with acrylic, just as with Boyd's stocks.  Then he sells the blanks and turns some himself....same goes for knife handles etc.

  He uses domestic wood and wood from around the world.  Here he explains..  https://www.facebook.com/reel/1686009442391861

   Here's an example of a finished pen in spalted Maple;
