Self checkout
« on: Yesterday at 02:46:36 AM »
Stores pay someone to watch self checkout aisles, and pay people to watch monitors. Why not just pay someone to open another checkout line, if theft is so high?  I very rarely use a self checkout. Only a few times if I have just a couple items. I see at stores like Lowes. You are forced to use a self checkout, because they don't have anyone running a checkout.

It's a response to the situation of not being able to get people to come to work. I gather from checkout clerks that checking out is exhausting, and not anyone's favorite job. I don't mind moving over to self checkout rather than standing behind Tilly Glutz, and a cart full of groceries,  if I want to get on my way.

We have some stores that have that feature available. For the nearest super market (about 12 miles), it is not a matter of opening new lines..

They had 5-6 normal open checkouts in line, but they have deserted them but one noirmal checkout, which is only open now and then.

So, I no longer shop there .  I shop at a nearby market that has only normal checkout, having no use for the video game players !

..Same goes for those convenience stores/ gas stations that also sell food.  Some are now set up to force one to play a video game to order a burger and fries !

They can go pound salt, so far as I am concerned..

Very seldom use the self check out, maybe if I only have 1 or 2 items. And 99% of the time, pay cash, hate to use a card. One time sticks out thou, few years back. Only a couple check outs were open,Kroger store, but didn't look to busy. Got in line, but went slow. When the person in front of me got close, and I started to unload, seen the clerk had a phone up to his ear, and talking. When I heard him talking, and it had nothing to do with the a price check or business related, really pi**ed me off, and in a rather loud voice said, REALLY, which got the attention of everybody within 20 or so feet. The clerk looked at me, and I politely said, ''Are you getting paid to talk or work''. Almost immediately, must have been his boss stepped in, apologized, and took over checking everyone out. One person behind me said thank you. All I did was give the new check out person a disgusting look. Should have been doing his job and kept the kid off the phone while working.

All self-checkouts in Minn. used to take cash or card, Now, some times, they only take cards.
I am not sure if the auto checkouts took the small silver dollars but they did not take Fifty Cent pieces or 2 dollar bills in most cases.

At one of the local Walfarts, there are two checkout areas: one mainly for groceries and one down in the hardware store area.
People will be lined  up at the grocery store auto and normal checkouts, so I walk down to the other one and just walk up to a manned register or auto checkout with no wait, nine times out of eleven.

People are to fat or lazy to walk an extra 100 feet.

I rarely use a card for anything, my statement often comes back at the end of the month, with zero balance.  I use cash because I think it's better and to help keep us from going cashless.

I use self checkout at my local Lowe’s and Home Depot because usually that’s all they have. You really need to watch their prices though, especially it seems at Lowe’s. Several times the computer has listed a higher price than what’s posted on their shelves.

  I've NEVER used a self-checkout and I NEVER will!

I'll drop everything on the floor where I'm standing and walk out before I use one!

I’m exactly opposite of that, yesterday I put my stuff on a flat surface and walked out Again because of two packed checkout lanes and 6 self checkouts that were ALL card only…

Most of my grocery shopping is done at an Aldi store. Not sure if their all like this, self check out is card only, but always have a clerk ready at the one that takes cash, which is the one I use. I can tell when their short staffed, been a few times a person is stocking a shelf, and then has to run up, punch in on the cash register and start scanning. I always tell them, don't rush on my part, but usually another costumer gets in line. And then will say, let me know when your district manager is here, I'll tell him, you need a raise. That gets a smile out of them!!

Also do a large portion of my shopping at Aldi’s. Prices are good in line with quality and the girls that work there do everything except lump the trucks… They are timed on their checkout which is usually fast even if they have a long line :)

AH, Home Depot, used to be the best lhardware type store in town, USED to be.
Now it is more like the way Menards used to be, which was not good.

There self-checkout is at the FAR end of the store and it makes more sense to go 4 feet farther and use the industrial check out that Usually has a person.
The return area IS handy to access but there you will be standing in-line while there are two other store workeers fiddling around.
Occasionally a upper level person, usually a dude , will  come and open another retrun spot.

Now Gopher, the local thrift-hardware store, as soon as there are three people in line, they will call for another checker and IF the line are still long , the will open up a make-shift checkout line to aleave the problem.
