Handgun hunting anyone?
« on: Yesterday at 11:34:01 AM »
It has been a while since I have been on GBO. I am still a hard core handgun hunter. I have been hunting with everything from Glocks to vintage S&Ws and everything in between. I see there isn't a lot of activity in the Handgun Hunting section though. A few of my handgun kills.

Used to handgun hunt primarily for many years. These days I've given up on hunting completely due to health and mobility issues. I just can't climb those hills and walk the woods anymore. I'd not be able to drag a dead deer back to my truck even if I were in sight of it and wouldn't be able to load one in the bed even if I could drive right to it.

My days of hunting are over. I'm now 80 years old, have cancer (leukemia CLL), diabetics, high blood pressure, COPD, my kidney function has dropped to 30% and my liver is in trouble also. I have a 6" diameter cysts on one kidney. I'm having major nerve pain issues to include but not limited to diabetic nephropathy. My left shoulder needs replacement surgery and my right knee prolly does also.

What I need is a new body but I'll hand in with the one issued to me at birth as long as I can but hunting no matter the tool used is now history for me.

About a month ago when I turned 75 I started walking in rough country. They are measured 1 mile walks that because of the terrain are helping my new knee, and my balance. I started out taking about 8 breaks on that 1 mile walk but, I'm now at a point that the walk is at a good pace, and I don't have to take any breaks.
Now,  back to the hunting.
Where I ranch (and walk) is all canyons and Caprock. There are mule deer, turkey, quail, an occasional rabbit, and calf killing coyotes. I pass on all the game but, the coyotes need to pay attention. I've always got a handgun, and sometimes a rifle. Most of what I shoot are rattlers.
Handgun hunting used to be one of my pastimes and I enjoyed it. Congrats on your obvious success.

handgun hunted exclusively for 32 years, went from tc's to scoped sixguns to only belt holster carried revolvers. killed many deer, bear, pigs and even 4 bison and one water buffalo. it got to the point the thrill was gone and it didnt seem any more challenging than a rifle. add to that my old eyes just couldnt handle open sights past about 50 yards, so for a few years i went back to rifles,. then one day i shot a deer and said why are you doing it. i can afford beef and there was just no excitement in the hunt and honestly there was remorse for even killing something just to kill it. so for about 5 years now i havent hunted anything and probably wont. i might go to camp during deer season but just cook for the nephews and my brother in law and during the day do repairs or split firewood for the wood stove. for the most part these days my 44s 45s and my linebaughs collect dust, 99 percent of my shooting is plinking or defensive drills with ars and guns like glocks. told the wife the other day its about time to lean out the collection and start handing out hunting guns to my grandkids and nephews because its sad they just sit in the safes

Sorry to hear about all of your misfortunes. Age isn't kind to anyone. I have been handgun hunting since 1978 and if anything the passion is worse now than them. I am going to enjoy it as long as I can.
