My neighbor who would in the past give me eggs has moved 40 mins away so I rarely get any from him. I would from time to time give him some money because I thought it right. He still passes through as his daughter lives in his house and if the hens are laying and I’m home he’ll drop some off. A rarity but appreciated when he does.

With full-flavored, orange yolks instead of the almost sickly pale yellow. One of the reasons I have a clutch of four in my backyard.

My neighbor in my home town, is putting up a chicken coop as the city now allows up to six hens.
They will do it but , he is pretty much BS white man speaks with forked tongue type.
At that.
This is in the middle of old town, when I was young one block West of Dad's house a lady had a full on old school chicken coop, lots of hens, with a rooster.
Of course back then down town had two places that one could buy chicks or take eggs to sell.
I do not care what any one says - THOSE were the Good old days.

Yeah, so very true…the difference between farm fresh and what sells in the supermarket is immense. Sadly, most people never get to see (and taste) the real thing.

Just make sure your farm fresh supplier doesn't have a rooster.

Roosters are as busy as buck bunnies. I grew up knowing that when your cooking with eggs and you have a rooster in the yard, break each egg separately in a bowl to see if there's blood in the yoke. The blood is the beginning of a chick.

Getting about 2 dz. a week from my hens. Got 4 chicks in the barn growing, will set up a cage in the regular pen shortly and get them familiarized with the older hens about the end of the month. Figure with these 4 and a few of the older hens still good for another year, should be good for 3 dz. a week, o will give some away once in awhile. And, definitely, NO rooster! Won't put up with noise at 6:15 am.

My neighbor a block west of me had a fighting rooster for about 2 years. He crowed off and on all day. Reminded me of when I was a kid. I used to raise Bantam chickens. The roosters we purty and feisty.

I miss hearing crows caw, and  Bluejays also.

      I do not know how it was down your way, but in my part of Minn., when I was young crow were there but actually quite scarse.
They were ONLY in the country and were very jumpy, you did not get close to them, now, they are thick in town, often a half-dozen will land to eat at a bird/squirrel feeder.
      You still cannot get real close but you can get within 30 yards often.

       There have been quite a few articles recently, on bird behaviour where it is showing climate, (not just temp. ) and where I am, both towns, Robins, Grackels and other formerly common birds in town are getting rare some yrars.
Kind of sad to sit out in the yard and have few birds/

I throw a deer carcass or two out back for the birds and they pick ‘em clean if it’s cold for awhile. Had a couple red tail hawks and a bunch of crows feeding on them one winter and heard the crows really fussing. The hawk must have wanted a hot meal cause it was out there eating crow …

  I have about 3 acre's of tree's, and about the same in farmland. Let a farmer use the back, and my house and barn are in the tree's. In the last few months, probably killed 4-5 opossum, and the same in 'coon. Just haul 'em out back to the field and thru them out there for the vulture's. Been quite a few times 7-8 are circling out back having lunch. Told my oldest son, one of these days we're gonna see a vulture with a banner behind him, when is the next buffet open??

I used to kill possums until I learned how many ticks they eat every year. Don't kill skunks much anymore either.

  Years back, when I lived in Texas, a friend of my brother wanted me to keep fighting cocks for him..in my pine woods. Then he could pick them up as needed.
  He said, because the law wouldn't suspect me, whereas they would spot the small coops at his placee, and then watch for him to drive off with some to a fight....and follow him.

  I respectfully declined.
 
Wife and I used to raise some chickens..and yes, the eggs are beyond compare with the store stuff.

My grandson raises somee , but hgee has three growing boys that are very active..work, football, wrestling , trapshooting , hunting etc..so he doesn't have a lot of extra eggs..but he gifts me ea dozen now and then.
